Year after year support for the Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf tournament remains enthusiastic because of its fundraising objectives, said Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation Chair Jerry Wintonyk May 10 at the official kick off held at Innovation Credit Union in North Battleford.

Wintonyk said the tournament is held "in memory of a good, fine man, a person who believed family and community are the most important issues of the day, an individual who represented the best qualities of a human being - caring honest and giving - and I'm proud to be associated with this tournament and the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation."

This year, said Wintonyk, the fundraising focus is on the laboratory. Funds raised by the tournament will purchase a centrifuge, a highly specialized piece of equpment that ensures accurate and precise assessment in diagnostic readings on clinical specimens that give information on the health of the patient, assisting in diagnosis treatment of disease. Any remaining funds will go toward various medical procedures in the emergency department.

Wintony said this golf tournament, now in its 17th year, remains popular and every year it is a sellout. Many of the golfers and volunteers were participants in the very first tournament, he added, including Wayne Pruden's family and many friends, saying "I believe this makes a man so respected remain so significant in this committee."

Sponsors are pivotal in the success of this event, he said.

"Innovation Credit Union helps make good things happen as evidenced by their continued master sponsorship of this event since 1997."

The past 16 years Ed Lee of M&M Meats has sponsored the 220 plus meals for the banquet, and the North Battleford Golf and Country Club sponsors the green fees.

Wintonyk said the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation is very grateful to have access to such a beautiful golf course for the annual tournament.
