Three individuals in piano, two individuals in strings, two individuals in musical theatre, two individuals in female voice and one choral group have been recommended by the adjudicators of the Battlefords Kiwanis Music Festival to compete at the provincial level. In addition, one singer, Tricia Florence, has been recommended to compete at the provincial level of the National Music Festival.
Florence, a University of Saskatchewan student, has been recommended to the provincial competition for Senior Grade A Female Voice, Senior Voice Canadian, Senior Voice French Art Song and Senior Voice Operatic Scholarship.
Recommended for Senior Grade B Female Voice is Nicole Klippenstein.
Amanda Thompson has been recommended for Senior Music Theatre, Ballad, and Senior Music Theatre, Up-Tempo.
Ericka Revet has been recommended in Intermediate Music Theatre, Ballad, and Intermediate Music Theatre, Up-Tempo.
Kamala Choir has been recommended in the Saskatchewan Choral Federation award class.
In piano, three musicians have been recommended to the provincial competition.
Katrina MacKinnon is recommended in Senior Bach, Senior Hadyn/Mozart, Senior Romantic Music and Senior 20th, 21st Century/Canadian.
Zavienne Kowalczyk is recommended in Intermediate Haydn/Mozart and Intermediate Piano Recital.
Khrystia MacKinnon is recommended in Intermediate Bach, Intermediate Chopin and Intermediate 20th, 21st Century/Canadian.
In the strings categories, Zaide Masich has been recommended to the provincial level in Intermediate Viola, Cello or Double Bass and Jeanny Jung has been recommended in intermediate violin.
The Battlefords musicians will join others from 49 other regional music festivals being held across the province this spring at the provincial finals to be held June 5 to 7 in Saskatoon.
Awards and scholarships were presented at a gala performance April 1 at the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, for the first time in the venue, highlighting adjudicator-chosen highlights from all disciplines and age categories.
In Speech Arts, winning awards or scholarships were the St. Vital Treble Makers (2), Sarah Iverson, Piper Mutch, Anna Currie, Khrystia MacKinnon, Kathleen Abrahamson and Catherine Regush.
In Vocal, Choral and Musical Theatre, awards and scholarships went to Jean Paul II Choir, Dance Connection Music Theatre Ensemble, Battlefords Children's Preparatory Choir and Kamala Choir, both conducted by JoAnne Kasper and Dianne Gryba. Mother and daughter Karen and Catherine Regush received the Robert MacKay Family Music Scholarship and Ted Sloan Family Music Plaque.
In the Junior Vocal categories, awards or scholarships went to Elizabeth Ranger, Sarah Iverson (3), Victoria Mahmood and Abbey Neufeld (3).
In the Intermediate and Senior Vocal categories, awards and scholarships went to Jordan Nachtegaele, Amanda Thompson (2), Ericka Revet, Morgan Esquirol (3), Shawn Martens, Courtney Wouters, Tawnie Kotyk (3) and Nicole Klippenstein.
In the Band categories, awards and scholarships went to Joshua Cooke (2), Victoria Mahmood (2), Noah Esquirol (2), North Battleford Comprehensive High School Concert Band conducted by Amy Francais (2), St. Vital Grade 4 Recorder Ensemble conducted by Eric Cawood, Percussive Arts Ladies conducted by Katelyn Hannotte and Ecole Monseigneur Blaise Morand Senior Band (Grades 6 and 7) and Grade 5 Intermediate Band, also conducted by Katelyn Hannotte.
In the Strings categories, award winners were Anna Currie, Dmitri Masich (3), Jeanny Jung (2), Victoria Mahmood, Taegen Isaac, Slavko Pristojko, Keegan Isaac, Zaide Masich (3) and the International String Band conducted by Erin Foreman.
In Junior Piano, awards went to Chimin Youn (4), Ava Bahrey (3), Chinha Youn (5) and Ashlyn Elmer.
In Intermediate and Senior Piano, awards were presented to Dante Bacchetto (2), Emilia Bacchetto (3), Chelsea Cooke (2), Zaide Masich, Emily Jung, Thane Ulven, ChinU Youn (2), Chinha Youn, Zavienne Kowlczyk (3), Khrystia MacKinnon (3) and Katrina MacKinnon (3) accepted by Khrystia for her sister.
Performing at the gala were the EMBM Intermediate Grade 5 Band conducted by Katelyn Hannotte, the St. Vital Treble Makers directed by Kelly Waters, Ericka Revet, Zavienne Kowalczyk, Victoria Mahmood, Ashlyn Elmer, Zaide Masich, Dance Connection Music Theatre Ensemble, Kathleen Abrahamson, Ava Bahrey, Sarah Iverson, Jeanny Jung, Dante Bacchetto, Amanda Thompson, Catherine Regush, Noah Esquirol, Courtney Wouters, Emily Jung, Morgan Esquirol, Keegan Isaac, Kamala Youth Choir and Tricia Florence.
