Autism Society offers respite program

A summer respite program is again being offered by the Battlefords Society for Autism.

A summer respite program is again being offered by the Battlefords Society for Autism.

The last two summers hadn't worked out for the program due to staffing, however this year the respite program is available again, says society member Terry Wiegers.

"Parents really appreciate it," says Wiegers.

The society applied for and received a grant that will pay for the respite program. The grant requirement is that a university student be hired as the program provider.

The student will be working with individuals, affording them an opportunity to be out in the community for more social interaction away from the home and family members.

"It gives them a chance to get out on their own and learn ways of communicating outside the family," says Wiegers.

The program also allows family to have some respite time.
