Area Christmas programs enjoyed

High score at Canasta, played Dec. 20, went to John Soloninko and Charles Walker, but a good time was enjoyed by everyone who played at the Do Drop In that evening. This is held every second Friday evening and anyone is welcome to join in.

The Meota Lions drove around town on the night of Dec. 20 and judged the yards that were decorated in the Christmas theme. The first choice was that of Leon and Joanne Proulx, second were Cassidy and Charlene Williams and third prize went to Mike and Sherry Doom. There were several homeowners who had done great jobs so it was not an easy decision. There are pictures at the post office showing each winner and the honourable mentions. Picture here is the Christmas creche at the Proulx residence.

Several local folks attended the hymn sing at Turtleford Dec. 20. Christmas carols were the theme for the program.

Adele Feschuk spent a few days in Meota visiting her son Marty and Beulah Corbiel and other friends. It's always nice to be back in home territory, although she's happy at Moonlight Bay on Turtle Lake.

Jim Starling of Medstead passed away Dec. 23 at the age of 89. Jim and Nora (Heyden) have lived and worked at Medstead all their married life and, as a pioneer, will be missed by the community.

Did I mention that in the state of Oregon that it is illegal to pump your own gas? My reporter also thought this was the case in New Jersey. Now we do really appreciate having our gas pumped for us, at least at my age I think we deserve it, so I hope other folks alsothink to tip those gas jockeys who are out in the cold, serving us.

Several folks from Meota attended the Candlelight Christmas held at the Third Avenue United Church in North Battleford, on a very cold Dec. 22. Performers were Lisa Hornung, Larrissa, James and John Chipak, accompanied by Stephen Carter on flute, John Chipak on guitar and by Gary Gansauge and Larissa Chipak on piano. Their presentations were well accepted by the crowd as they did a lovely job of the many carols they sang.

My northern readers will enjoy hearing that my daughter Joyce Rowland left for two months to Brisbane, Australia on Christmas Day where she will join her son Michael Jowsey. This was a sudden decision, so she has lots of homework to do as to the plants, animals and birds over there are all different than what we have in Canada. She may be joined in later January by more family members. The New Zealand relatives have been to Canada and did a coast to coast trip by train. The animal that intrigued them most was the beaver and we were able to show them a beaver house at Chitek andsome trees cut down along the Battle River at the campground at Fabyan, Alta.

There are lots of fish shacks out on the lake now, and I'm still planning to find a few to eat, I really miss having fresh fish on occasion.

Many folks travelled to many places for the holiday, so we hope with the bad weather we've had, especially in Alberta, that their trips were happy and safe ones. Sorry to hear of several folks who spent time in hospital during the holiday and wish them a healthier 2014.

Linda and I went to Turtleford for brunch Christmas morning with my granddaughter and her family, then westof North Battleford for the big meal of the day, with my granddaughters and their mother and family. The weather here that day was fine and not as cold as it had been.

Beulah Corbiel travelled to Beaumont, Alta. where she enjoyed Christmas with her son Brian and his family. Her granddaughters came for her and brought her back on rather treacherous roads.

The Meota Combines played the Battleford Beaver Blues at the Battleford Arena on Dec. 27 and will play the Radisson Wheat Kings on Jan. 12 at the Civic Center.

Christmas Eve service at the Meota United/Anglican church had a full house and a veryChristmassy service. Members from the Mervin area were down to join this group. There was also a service at the Catholic Church with a good turnout and socializing.

While we are shovelling snow, folks at Taber, Alta. are enjoying the fact that their snow has melted and there's water in the ditches. In northern British Columbia they had a day of rain, forming puddles in the yard, followed by a day of snow. What a mess! After seeing the mess down in eastern Canada and the eastern United States, we should never complain again. At least we are prepared to deal with what we're dealt. The town has been so great in clearing the main streets, making walking and driving much easier. It seems there's some snowfall nearly every day. That's when I missmy garage so badly.
