How did the end of March arrive so fast? Are you enjoying slight signs of spring in the air?
Spring is often time for annual meetings. Delta Co-op, employer of 156 staff in the four locations they serve, held their meetings over a three-day period at various locations to announce another successful year, as well as to introduce some of their exciting plans for the future.
The North West Terminal held their annual meeting March 19, with an excellent crowd in attendance. Unity Credit Union was next up with their AGM March 25. Coming up is the Unity and District Food Bank annual general meeting April 29 at 10 a.m., being held at the Unity Community Resource Centre, with everyone welcome to attend.
Things will be a little different in downtown Unity with three businesses announcing they will no longer be open until 9 p.m. Thursday nights. Both food stores will still have extended hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each week day.
The Unity Ministerial Association has two Lenten lunches left, today, March 27, at St. Peter's Church and April 3 at the Unity Baptist Church. Each event includes a shared lunch with a short worship service to follow.
The Unity Ministerial Association will also continue their annual Way of the Cross Walk on Good Friday, April 18, beginning at 10 a.m. sharp. The event will start at the Unity United Church and walkers will make their way throughout town, ending up at the Anglican church where participants can enjoy hot chocolate and hot cross buns.
The Way of the Cross Walk is an ecumenical and intergenerational event appreciated by young and old. There will be transportation for those unable to walk the entire route, as well as a speaker system so everyone can hear the service at the various stopping points.
At Unity Composite High School, badminton has hit its stride with many events taking place for both junior and senior teams. The track team is anxious to move their training outdoors in preparation for May track events, and even had some track team members complete at the Kinsmen Indoor Track Meet earlier this month.
The drama club will hold their spring performances April 3 and 4 with show times at 7:30 p.m. They are featuring the productions W and Korn Mash. With Regional Drama Festival being hosted in Unity again, you can be sure this spring's production will be at its finest, ready to entertain audiences both in town and at the festival.
Nominations are also being accepted now for the UCHS Hall of Honour, with the deadline being April 17. Nomination forms are available from UCHS or on their website.
As well the Warrior Football Club will run their annual Mom's Pantry fundraiser until April 1. It's not too late to get your order in by contacting the school or any Warrior football player.
At Unity Public School, report cards have been handed out and student-led conferences were held March 25. This gives students the last part of their school year to strive for improvements or keep the pace as far as their academic success goes. UPS music festival practices continue as students are almost ready to participate in the annual music festival.
St. Peter's will be hosting the school portion of the Unity Music Festival Tuesday, April 8 in both the a.m. and p.m. They have entries from Grades 1 to 6 plus the choir for the festival. There will be more information about the school portion of the festival at a later date. Thanks, choir, for all your noon hour practices.
Hockey playoffs? Here's what we know. Congratulations, Peewee Lazers, who captured the Hi-way 14 League championship March 14. The combined peewee provincial team is currently playing Shaunavon in the final, hoping to capture a provincial C peewee title.
The midget A squad is in the finals of provincials, after they defeated Melfort in the north provincial final. They now play Yorkton for the provincial title. Game one was in Yorkton March 22 and they lost a very close game by a score of 1-0. Game two will be in Unity March 28.
The midget As encountered KDL, Kerrobert/Dodsland/Luseland, in their league final however the KDL team was too strong to overcome and the Midget Lazers sadly lost a repeat league title to the KDL squad.
The Midget AA Lazers are also in both league and provincial finals, playing Beardy's in the league finals and Notre Dame in the provincial finals, with their provincial home game being played March 29 at 4 p.m.
Heather Wood, who is playing with the West Central Midget AA Wheat Kings, had a sad end to the league championship series but is one game away from a provincial girls' midget AA title, playing against the Regina Capitals. The team headed to Regina March 23 and returns to Dodsland for game two March 30.
The Neilburg Monarchs Midget A team, that includes Unity girls, Samantha David, Jensen Chorney, Brennae Hofmann, Brittany Hauta and Mackenzie Chorney, is also in the finals of its league, against Saskatoon, after losing a close match to Elrose for the provincial title. It was a heartbreaking end to the season when the team lost by a Saskatoon goal at the 1:38 point of the third period. This is the last year of minor hockey for both Brittany and Mackenzie who will be graduating in June.
Braden Lacoursiere and the Battlefords North Stars started their playoffs against the Estevan Bruins and were able to defeat the Bruins in five games, sending them to the next series against the Melville Millionaires.
Alex Pernitsky who plays with the Battlefords AAA Midget North Stars, headed into league playoffs by dominating the Prince Albert Mintos. The Stars completed their second sweep of the playoffs, knocking off the PA Mintos in three straight games in the SMAAAHL semifinal. The excitement was building as the Stars advanced to the SMAAAHL final.
Last, but never least, our very own senior hockey team, the Unity Miners, played a hard fought series with the Lloydminster Border Kings, including some overtime games. The Miners swept the series, earning the Sask West Hockey League championship title for 2014. For a team that was considered nearly extinct a couple of years ago, the new executive has worked hard to rebuild not only the team but also the community's faith in and support of the team and it paid off March 21 on the road. Congratulations, players, coaches, executive and supporters of the Unity Miners!
And congratulations to Mark Ganter, who played for the Deslise Chiefs junior B squad and earned top rookie and top points recognition for this past season.
Unfortunately the busy hockey season, as well as spring-like weather, took its toll on both the annual ladies' bonspiel and the year-end funspiel, both forced to be cancelled for this year. A number of volunteers worked on ice removal and the curling season is now officially over for another year. The curling club is will hold their windup April 4.
The Unity and District Heritage Museum continues to hold their Sunday pancake brunches. A small, but enthusiastic, group of volunteers is ready with hot food and warm smiles for those folks who want to join them, while supporting this fundraising effort for the local museum.
Minor ball registration was held March 20 with another full house of players coming back to join the softball and baseball divisions of UMB. Unity Minor Ball is hosting the Softball Fever camp May 10 with the annual Minor Ball Day slated for May 11. A work party will be held as soon as the venue dries up a little more, to set the stage for another exciting year with softball and baseball at the Unity diamonds.
Soccer registration will be held April 14 in the rink lobby from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for four- to fourteen-year-old players. Forms will be available at that time. If you are unable to make it that evening for registration, you may pick up a form at the town office and leave your payment with them by April 16 at 4 p.m. No late registrations will be accepted. Your child must be turning four this year, i.e., must have been born in 2010, to be eligible to play. There will be no exceptions.
Don't forget the Show Case of Stars March 28 and 29, put on by local dance school, Revolution Dance. There will be a different show performed each night. Tickets can be purchased at the door of the UCHS gym, with show time set for 7 p.m. sharp.
Coffee row folks certainly are enjoying and reviewing all the excitement this hockey season has brought with so many teams and players still in the final run of league and/or provincial playoffs. The weather keeps everyone theorizing and guessing, as well as many reminiscing about the massive spring storm we received last year at this same time. Spring weather, spring seeding and still existent grain backlog are hot topics as well. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
