An exceptional year for Unity Minor Ball

It really is mid-August already. I just can't say I have had a summer go faster than this one but in spite of numerous weather warnings it has been fantastic weather for growing gardens, flowers and crops, as well as vacationing.

Don't forget that today, Friday, Aug. 17 is the Big Top circus at the Unity Regional Park with shows at 5:30 and 8 p.m. with doors opening one hour before the show. Advance tickets are also on sale at the grounds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Congratulations to the UK Royals who won Western Canadian Junior B Softball championships in Moose Jaw over the August long weekend. The team included Unity players: Charnele Jellison, Jessica Gerein, Shirraya Tuchscherer, Chelsea Robertson, Natalie Keifer, Jenna Wood and pick-up Kelsey Wildeman.

Congratulations also to Blake Robertson who has advanced to nationals for baseball with the Lloydminster AAA Twins. They will be playing in a suburb outside of Toronto soon.

Congratulations also to the Unity Cardinals who lost a close final to be second in the province for senior men's baseball.

The community is extremely proud to have fielded so many teams this year in minor ball, and is especially proud of two baseball teams winning provincial titles, along with two players picked up by another team also winning a provincial title. In addition, two softball teams won provincial titles in the minor ball divisions, and the inaugural junior team captured a provincial title. And this same junior team went on to win a Western Canadian title, all this combining to make this the most exciting year for ball in our community yet.

The bantam girls' softball team also won a bronze at this year's edition of the Saskatchewan Summer Games, and there is Unity content on the Zone 7 Softball team competing at this year's Fall Ball Zone Provincial Championship in Moosomin this year. Brent Weber coached all three of these bantam teams. Congratulations to all coaches and players for this year's successes!

Summer Fun Centre wrapped up its season Aug. 10. There is only a few weeks left in the swimming pool season. It is one of the best places to cool off. The pool is open for public swimming each afternoon and evening, as well as offering weekday aqua-sizes class. And watch for the ever popular moonlight swims which take place after public swimming Wednesdays. Last chance to register for the upcoming scuba diving four-hour lesson or the diving clinic. Call the pool at 228-2133 if you are interested in either of these events.

Remember the Unity Golf Club is hosting lunch time specials Tuesdays and Thursdays, and also features barbecued beef or pork on a bun for only $4 Wednesdays. The golf course is always ready for your golfing experience. Whether you are a recreational or serious golfer, tee times can be booked through the clubhouse.

Also coming up for the golf course is the annual Fun Day of Golf. This year's event is again a fundraiser for the Unity Facilities Committee (UFC), who are working hard on their fundraising goal for the new ground floor hall and swimming pool. Why not enter a team or call a UFC committee member to volunteer.

And runners and walkers are encouraged to start preparations for the third annual Candace Heitt Memorial Run that will take place Sept. 16. Registrations can be made now by contacting Donna Boser at 228-2181 or Terra Heitt at 228-2532. Funds raised from this event are earmarked for the walking paths at the health centre to benefit patients and long-term care residents, as well as anyone else who wishes to take advantage of the walk in nature.

Our local chamber of commerce are always doing their best to promote shopping locally. Think of this when you are looking to buy your children's back to school supplies as several locations in town carry these items, giving you one less trip to make in the busy season ahead.

The UFC has received permission from the town to explore a potential location site between the Cardinals diamond and the Elks diamond. Although fundraising initiatives have been largely organized by the committee itself, they still look towards community groups and members to help them reach their goal of building a new ground floor hall and new swimming pool sometime in the future.

Coffee row folks are sad to see the Olympics coming to an end as it is always fuel for conversation, discussing the wins, the losses and the heart-warming stories that develop throughout the event. And Rider season is never off the coffee row consulting table as fans discuss the pros and cons of what is working this season and what isn't working. The weather can never be sidelined as it gives us such a variety of conditions each week that it is sure to spark debate on whether we have or have not seen another year like this ... So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
