ENGLEFELD 鈥� This year鈥檚 Englefeld Hogfest was a success, with just over 700 people served this year, said Englefeld recreation board president Charlie Biemans.
For the 48th year in a row, visitors of the Hogfest from the town and surrounding area spent the last weekend of June participating in a slow pitch tournament, kids鈥� carnival, beer gardens and penny auction. The festival ended with the pig roast dinner and dance Saturday evening, followed by a pancake breakfast and pig drop Sunday morning.
Like last year, the pig drop involved dumping a bucket of small plastic pigs from a helicopter onto the field behind Englefeld鈥檚 school.
Of 381 pigs, Barb Gerspacher鈥檚 landed 鈥渨ithin inches of the bullseye 鈥� despite windy conditions,鈥� said Biemans.
Gerspacher, from Englefeld, took home $1,905; half of the proceeds raised from the pig drop. Sandy Borstmayer of Naicam was awarded second place and a Farm Hopper Blow Up Pig.
鈥淚t was the perfect way to end a great weekend,鈥� said Biemans.
This year鈥檚 slow pitch tournament featured 12 teams compared to last years eight, said recreation board treasurer Deanna Miskolczi.
