Is it spring or are we being teased some more? It is hard to revel in spring-like weather with all the surprises we have had with our seasons this year . . .
The Unity Ministerial Association held their annual Way of the Cross Walk on Good Friday, starting at 10 a.m. from the Unity United church. This interdenominational event included parishioners from all five congregations this year, with approximately 70+ folks attending. Worshippers listened to readings and joined in prayer after each of the 12 stations that were visited. Various participants took turns carrying the wooden cross to represent the path that Jesus followed to his crucifixion. Following the event, the Anglican Church hosted participants for hot cross buns and coffee.
Softball teams are treated to Softball Fever camp put on by Softball Saskatchewan, April 30, at the local diamonds. As well, being that there is no school May 2, baseball is hosting a pitching clinic in the arena for interested participants. The Bantam and Midget Panthers then begin league play as part of the Battlefords Ladies League, set to begin May 4. All teams in Unity will be getting ready for their first big event, Minor Ball Day May 15. The last weekend of the month, May 27-29, the diamonds will host the annual Miners slo-pitch tournament, which includes three days of tournament play and a dance Saturday night featuring Paradise Road, the great band that we heard at the Oilpersons' bonspiel. This big tournament offers cash prizes for three events. Also, the Friday night slo-pitch league starts today and will run every Friday until June 24.
At UCHS, now that badminton season is officially over, the track team is gearing up for their season. They have been practising indoors for some time now but will kick into high gear being that their first meet takes place May 17, followed by District qualifiers.
Unity will host a Blood Donor Clinic May 3. Canadian Blood Services are always looking for donors and they have a set quota of 200 units for this clinic. Won't you help out by volunteering to 'give a little' for this drive? Donors are treated to beverages and snacks following donations.
Also May 3, the United Church will hold their annual spring rummage sale from 4 to 8 p.m. So if you are looking for some work clothes, some bargain apparel or just looking, come on down to the United Church CE building and see what is available. Donations can be brought to the back doors of the United Church from now until May 2, doors open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m daily.
The Paw Park, Unity's first off-leash dog park will be drawing for their raffle May 15. Tickets are still available from many businesses in town. They are starting construction in June and are open to any donors or sponsors who may want to be part of this unique undertaking in Unity.
The UCHS drama club will be presenting this semester's production, a Harry Potter musical parody, on May 17, 18 and 19 for the general public. Watch for details on this because it will include another dessert theatre, always a big hit.
Unity School of Dance, having done very well in competitions in Saskatoon and Lloydminster, are still competing in the annual Dance Festival in North Battleford this week. This will wrap up their competition season and the club will be soon winding down from another dance year. They will showcase all of the club's talent at their annual recital May 13 and 14.
The Unity museum office will be officially open for the season May 1. Please include the museum in your list of places to see, and take our visitors to, this summer. The museum group does an excellent job of showcasing this sightseeing spot and needs your help in promoting its grandeur.
The UFC (which stands for Unity Facilities Committee representing the new hall and pool projects) will hold a community garage sale May 7, from 9 am to 4 pm in the Unity curling arena. Tables are a bargain price at $10 each on a first come, first serve basis. There will also be a BBQ lunch available for purchase starting at 11:30 a.m. Project unveiling and presentation will be at 1 p.m. sharp. All proceeds from this event go to the UFC projects. If you want to rent a table, or volunteer for the event, please contact Carey Baker at the town office.
The Unity golf course is getting ready for another golf season. The annual meeting was held at the Unity golf clubhouse April 27 and all members and prospective members were urged to attend. Information was available on the progress of the new fairway and other plans for improvements to be made at the course in the coming year. The golf club welcomes new members of all ages. Tentative opening date is April 30.

Coffee row is alive with discussion on the impending nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It serves as more lighthearted discussion than the soon to follow federal election. And although both can claim they are serving individual political purposes, it was agreed that the London event will garner more viewers than the national election. And so again you can see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week . . .
