Administrators at St. Vital School dressed, danced, and sang as chickens as part of the school's sixth annual Poverty Hearts campaign.
The campaign was held last February in conjunction with Free the Children's "We Are Love" campaign. There were class incentives for donations raised such as earning cookies, ice cream or pizza but there was also school-wide incentive involving the school's administration team, principal Don Buglas and vice-principal Kirby Arbeau.
If the school as a whole raised over $1,500 they agreed to dress as chickens, dance the chicken dance, and sing a duet dressed as chickens for the student body.
Since close to $2,000 was raised during the February campaign, the administration team made good on their chicken performances promises June 5,for an audience of cheering students.
Poverty Hearts are made of paper, reused each year, and cost 25 cents each. The money raisedwas divided between the Food Bank's milk program and our school's support of San Miguel Ecuador's water issues through Free the Children's Adopt-a-Village program.
Sobeys allowed St. Vital students to set up a donation table at their exit for one weekend in February with those donations being allotted to the Food Bank.
The students also salute the school secretary Mrs. Bishop for designing the chicken costumes.
The Grade 7 class has been the reigning class champion since the Poverty Hearts campaign began during St. Vital's first year of involvement with Free the Children and goals to raise awareness about local and global child poverty issues.
