Activities planned to honour school staff

I am so excited about this month as it is filled with two of my favourite events - celebrating family birthdays and watching the best of curling on TV. Opening ceremonies for the Olympics will also be on the agenda.

Global warming is a ridiculous term. We must be heading into the Ice Age! This winter has been cold, very cold and extremely cold. And look around folks, what do you see? Ice, more ice and lots of ice. Things that make you hmm

Next week is National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week when local schools will serve up snacks, meals and plenty of TLC to thank their teachers and staff for the work they do all year.

Semester final exams at UCHS took place last week. This wraps up the first half of Grade 12 for seniors, leading them to the last leg of their high school experience. Semester two is underway, although it won't be a long beginning as the spring break is coming up real quick.

District curling playdowns take place Feb. 8 week for juniors and seniors. For those senior teams advancing from districts to regionals, those take place Feb. 14. If the team advances from regionals, they will head to provincial playdowns Feb. 28 to March 1.

Basketball teams are also lining up for their district conference that hopefully will lead them to a regional spot and subsequent provincial berth.

It won't be long until the badminton rackets are out again too. As well, following the break, the drama club will be kicking it up for their spring production which will include the regional drama festival being hosted in Unity once again. Watch for details on these events to come.

Unity Public School, division II, will enjoy a ski day at Table Mountain Feb. 10. Students will recognize Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week Feb. 10 - 14. Following the break, the music festival choir will kick up their practices for this year's festival. As well, senior students are busy with basketball and curling practices.

UPS had a very special assembly, Feb. 5 Watch next week for further details.

Next week parents, the SCC and school division will help recognize teachers and staff at St. Peter's School for National Teacher Staff Appreciation Week. They will kick off the week with the Feel the Pulse retreat and saintswear for both staff and students. The popular Are you Fit as a 6th Grader? competition will take place at 12:30 p.m. in their gym, Feb. 13. Students are encouraged to dress as their favourite Olympian.

Are You Fit as a 6th Grader? has always been an entertaining and competitive program where Grade 6 students see if they can outwit, outplay and outlast their community counterparts. A number of timed drills are set up and Grade 6 students are pitted against volunteer participants, both parents and community members.

On Valentine's Day, the St. Pete's student body is encouraged to dress in pink or red to celebrate. This will end off the week and send staff and students off to a weeklong spring break that encompasses Family Day Monday.

The hockey arena is full of hockey action as all teams in all divisions are now playing in league playoffs and have begun their provincial playoff quests.

In 2013, two peewee teams were made out of the large number of kids registered in this division. The teams split out and played in the Highway 14 hockey league as well as the Step League. In the last regular season hockey game between this year's two peewee squads, Feb. 3, organizers took time to raise last year's two league championship banners recognizing the success of these teams last year.

You will want to be sure to check the weekly schedule hanging at the arena for what's coming up at the rink. We don't want to forget our skating club is in the latter part of their season which includes test days in addition to carnival preparation as they get ready for their annual ice carnival held the beginning of March. You can also view the schedule on the Town of Unity website.

Whether you enjoy watching the youngest hockey stars, the experienced older divisions or even senior hockey at its finest, there is always a spot in the bleachers for the fans.

The Unity Curling Club will hold non-stop action in February. The annual JayDee AgTech Men's Bonspiel is Feb. 4 to 9. Immediately following this event the ice technicians will be preparing for the Affinity Credit Union Provincial Senior Men's and Women's Curling Championships Feb. 18 to 23.

Immediately following that event is the annual oilpersons' bonspiel. In addition to all the bonspiel and championship action there will still be junior curling and Tuesday and Wednesday league curling. You can come on down to the curling rink where you can watch the Scotties, Olympics and the Brier on the 60-inch flat-screen and catch your favourite curlers in some live curling action. The seating area is spacious, plenty of TVs to go around and always a fellow curling enthusiast to share a game with.

Good luck to our local athletes headed to Saskatchewan Winter Games in Prince Albert this February. Athletes named so far to represent Rivers West Sports District are: Dalyn McCubbing and Jared Risling, hockey; and Mackenna Vany and Breanna Elder, alpine skiing.

Don't forget the Sunday brunches at the museum are back on. This is a great place to share a meal with friends and neighbours and support the hard work of the small group that operates our fabulous museum.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Celebrate Unity gala evening at the community centre March 3. Tickets are only available at Unity Credit Union. Purchased before Feb. 21 they will be $35; after this date they will be $45. Come out and enjoy a fabulous meal prepared by Kraft's Catering, a program to recognize honorees from our community and the popular band Hoja.

Unity Baptist Church is hosting a Valentine's event Feb. 14, starting at 7:30 p.m. It is a no cost video event; babysitting is available and cheesecake and coffee will be served. However, you must RSVP to Jim or Noella Chase at 306-228-7838.

There is another great selection of job opportunities in our local paper. You can view these on the Town of Unity website if interested.

February is grand for winter sports enthusiasts. Between the Olympics, the curling championships of the Scotties and the Brier, Saskatchewan Winter Games, local bonspiels and local hockey teams playing in their quest for league and provincial titles, there will be no lack of sports talk on the tables this month. Mr. Groundhog, "do you agree or disagree" conversations were also popular at coffee row so you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
