Activities gearing up for fall

Unity News

This is the last long weekend of summer. Please arrive alive by being patient with increased RV and farm traffic. Everyone wants to get to their destination so driving with caution and patience can help everyone arrive alive.

Don鈥檛 be the guy who claims 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 know!鈥 Organizers of fall events and activities actively post registration information on Facebook, put up posters and ads in the paper as well as details in school newsletters.听 Please take a proactive role in seeking this information rather than claiming you didn鈥檛 know.

You can be sure after the long weekend, things are going to get a whole lot busier here in town. Here is some of what鈥檚 upcoming:

The food bank can always use donations.听 Consider an extra item or two at the case lot or 10 for 10 sales at your local food stores. Don鈥檛 wait for a food drive as there are bins set up at both Unity food stores for contributions all year long.

Summer is over; I bet those community churches would love to see people back in their pews. Remember they provide more than Sunday services at their buildings and their volunteers and their congregations upkeep and maintain their properties. They play host to annual music festival and Remembrance Day services. The Ministerial Association organizes the Christmas Service of Remembrance as well as the Way of the Cross Walk and helps organize/participate in Remembrance Day services. Their halls are used for classes, wedding and baby showers, anniversaries, family gatherings and the always popular Fall Suppers. There is more to our churches than Easter lilies and poinsettias. Unity churches includes St. Peter鈥檚 Catholic Church, Unity United Church, Lutheran Church, Unity Baptist Church and the Anglican Church, which, while not holding regular service, still provides activity and events at their church (contact Val Middleton for updates).

The Riders are fun to talk about again after defeating the undefeated Stamps to a sold out crowd at home. We are headed to the Labour Day classic and although we don鈥檛 get to watch our favourite player number 7 Dressler play, it is a great Saskatchewan experience nonetheless.

Coffee row folks 鈥 the urban dictionary refers to coffee row as 鈥渁 place where groups of people, typically seniors and farmers, gather to have coffee and converse about the day鈥檚 events.鈥 The term has its origins in rural Saskatchewan and Alberta. Typically 鈥渃offee row鈥 occurs in small town restaurants and co-ops, but the phenomena have been observed in fast food restaurants in large cities as well as any restaurant that serves 鈥渂ottomless鈥 cups of coffee and is not too strict on what some would consider 鈥渓oitering.鈥 Today people might turn to Facebook or Twitter for a quick answer on 鈥渨hat kind of bug is this, or who would be the best guy to go to for a new muffler.鈥 But it wasn鈥檛 all that many years ago, this kind of assistance was found in a place fondly referred to as 鈥渃offee row.鈥 So you can see life is full of fun and activity in Unity and our friends at coffee row sharing this traditional part of our community culture. Until next time鈥
