The Battlefords Art Club has a long history of supporting visual arts in the community. It promotes exhibits of local work with the aim of encouraging its members in developing their potential for creating satisfying artwork in any medium. The club also encourages visits by artists from elsewhere and promotes a variety of workshops. The club meets regularly Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Don Ross Centre and new members are always welcome.
I grew up in the Cando district and after high school I trained as a medical laboratory technologist in Saskatoon. After finishing my diploma, I worked at Battlefords Union Hospital for a short time and then turned in my lab coat to become a farm wife and mother in the Wilkie area.
After my children went to school I retrained as an early childhood educator and worked at different childcare facilities in North Battleford. I also did a four-year stint teaching First Nation childcare at Onion Lake and North Battleford SIIT campuses.
I am married to Terry Hochbaum, have four children and nine grandchildren and we now live in Battleford.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Athabasca University and in 2013 received a certificate in art and design from the University of Saskatchewan USCAD program, majoring in painting. Although my major was in painting, my first love is fibre arts - quilting. I enjoy making traditional quilts but decided I wanted to change direction and design more "art type" quilts. What started out as taking a few classes to hone the design process ended up with completing the program.
I belong to the Battlefords Art Club, Rivers' Edge Quilters, Battlefords Hand Quilters, and Wilkie Quilters and meet frequently with a fibre art group in Saskatoon under the tutelage of Elizabeth Babyn. I recently joined the Saskatchewan Craft Council and will be taking part in the juried process next winter.
I've taken painting workshops from Dean Bauche, Karen Richter, Leah Dorian and Graham Flatt.
I am fascinated with colour and the relationships between colours. I am working on a large exhibit of quilts that are featuring a colour study of blue to be shown next summer at the Chapel Gallery.
