99th birthday celebrated, plans all ready for 100th

John Newbold celebrated his 99th birthday with friends dropping in for cake and coffee at his home in Borden Jan. 2, with his sister Olive Foley from Kamloops the hostess. John still likes to dance whenever he can and already has the Hamp's Orchestra booked for his 100th, to be held in September when relatives are home to help with harvest.

Thanks to all those who dropped in at the Borden Seniors' Room Jan. 2 to help celebrate my 75th birthday, and for cards and gifts. Thanks to Eileen Petrun for the beautiful cake and to my husband Jim for paying for the coffee and cake, also to my family for the celebration supper Jan. 1.

Upcoming at Borden are the museum's whist drive Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and a bingo Jan. 23 at 7 p.m., hosted by Borden Seniors' Club, both in the Seniors' Room. Then Wellness Our Way (WOW) is holding an afternoon of basic wellness and health Jan. 26 in the Seniors' Room at 1 p.m.

Dallas Burnett of Borden School skipped a team in the Junior Men's Provincial Curling at Weyburn Jan. 3 - 7. The team curls out of the Langham Curling Club and players are: third, Connor Wonko of Langham; second, Andrew Derksen and lead, Eric Westad, both from Borden School. Although having to play against older teams out of Saskatoon and Regina and losing their five games in the round robin, they played their best, with 12 teams competing. In the finals, it was Brady Scharback of the Sutherland Club playing Cole Tenetuik of the Granite Curling Club for first place and a chance to go to the Canadian finals in Fort McMurray, Alta.

The Langham Curling Club has structural damage to the roof resulting from too much snow; the rink is not playable until renovations are done during the summer. The provincial firemen's bonspiel, hosted by the Borden firefighters, was to have been at Langham Feb. 8 - 10, with the banquet at Borden, but they are awaiting word from the Saskatchewan Fire Fighters Curling Association as to where they will be playing with the closing of the rink.

In Borden School news, the gym has now been re-opened after almost four months, with the interior painting done over the Christmas break. There were not enough boys for a senior basketball team to continue but they did host a tournament Dec. 7 and 8. The only team playing is junior girls' basketball, and they played in a tournament in Blaine Lake Jan. 5. Other games are Jan. 15 at Dalmeny, hosting Perdue Jan. 17 and Langham Jan. 24, playing in a tournament in Asquith Jan. 26 and going to Blaine Lake Jan. 30. Coaching the junior team is Mr. Shaun Dyck.

Quite a few students are curling and they practice in Radisson Tuesdays and Wednesdays with coach Mrs. Atina Ford-Johnston.

In band there are four students - Aryn Polichuk in senior and jazz, and, in beginner, Spencer and Colton Thiessen and Calum Sleidreicht. The beginner lessons are at Borden with Mr. Martin and Aryn goes to Asquith with Mrs. Wolfe the instructor.

Borden School is fundraising for a new score clock and donations have been received from Affinity Credit Union and Borden Lions.

Grades 9 -12 write final exams Jan. 25 - 31. There is no school Feb. 1 for semester turnaround. Prairie Spirit School Division is moving towards the removal of recommends and this is the final year of a three-year phasing out program. The Grade 9 - 11 classes will not have recommends this year or the ensuing years and the Grade 12s will have access to recommends for the last time this year.

Community council meets Jan. 7 at the school. There is no school Jan. 14. There will be hot lunches Jan. 16 and 23.

The grads will have their cap and gown photos taken Feb. 23.

The Borden Lions are still taking scholarship applications, up until Jan. 15, for post-secondary education students from the Borden and Langham area. Applicants must be full-time students at university, technical school or business college for a minimum of two years and must have successfully completed one year of studies. Forms can be obtained from Borden or Langham schools and from Borden Lions members John Buswell, Sharon Assman or Wendell Dyck.
