Why am I putting something in Maymont News about Carl Ross? Well let me tell you. Carl just turned 75 April 1. No, Carl was not an April Fool's joke. Anytime we have any event in Maymont and we ask Carl to attend to sing or just be part of the crowd, he's there and we truly appreciate him and his talents. Carl, our George Jones, has entertained us for years. Happy birthday, Carl and many many more.
Carl will be performing in Mayfair for their Nashville Night April 12. Come join us for a night of fun and entertainment. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Things are progressing nicely at the Maymont Seniors' Centre. Last week the walls were painted and the carpet was laid. We are now waiting for new cupboards. Thanks again to all those who are volunteering their time and workmanship to help us with the centre.
Our seniors June and Dean Rogers and Mel Deagnon, Bert Carpentier and Tom Caldwell sold tickets at the Co-op Mall for the fundraiser we're having. June and Dean will be there again, so watch for them. The draw is for a gift basket and for an afghan blanket donated by Kay Greenslade. Check with our Maymont seniors for tickets, and thank you to all those who purchase tickets.
I know it's a while until our trade show May 24 in the Maymont Hall. Anyone wanting to be a vendor, please contact Carol at 306-389-2440.
Did you know? Over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made each year.
Easter is really an entire season of the Christian church year, as opposed to a single-day observance. Lent, the 40-day period before Easter Sunday, is a time of reflection and penance and represents the 40 days Jesus spent alone in the wilderness before starting his ministry.
The week preceding Easter is called Holy Week and includes Maundy Thursday, which commemorates Jesus' last supper with his disciples; Good Friday, which honours the day of his crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, which focuses on the transition between the crucifixion and resurrection.
The 50-day period following Easter Sunday is called Eastertide and includes a celebration of Jesus's ascension into heaven.
In addition to Easter's religious significance, it also has a commercial side, as evidenced by the mounds of jelly beans and marshmallow chicks that appear in stores each spring. As with Christmas, over the centuries various folk customs and pagan traditions, including Easter eggs, bunnies, baskets and candy, have become a standard part of this holy holiday.
Maymont School of Dance is hosting a recital Sunday at 2 p.m. Performances in jazz, lyrical and hip hop will be featured. The school's teachers are Joy Domak and Sarah Bajak.
My holidays are coming soon so, if you see nothing in the paper for Maymont News, that's because I'll be away but I'll be back.
