Congratulations to Lyndon and Kayla Block on the birth of Ava Marie on Feb. 2. Proud grandparents are Don and Jeanette Block and David and Karen Buckingham of Borden. Great-grandparents are Helen Block of Saskatoon and Ron and Eileen Suderman of Borden.

The Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club held their annual public speaking competition on March 1 at the Hafford Ukrainain Hall with 26 members speaking. General Leader is Richard Yasieniuk and assistant is Donna Verbonac. Project leaders are Jim Attrux and Glenn Sutherland for intermediate and seniors and for Cloverbud and juniors the leaders are Bev Reid and Sandra Yasieniuk. Club president is Anna Verbonac, vice-president is Rachel Sutherland, secretary Brittany Attrux and treasurer Tyler Yasieniuk. The judges were Colleen Wicks from Speers, Jenna Rudolph and Connie Jessop from Leask and Murray Hardcastle from Langham. Richard was MC, thanking the judges, sponsors, members and parents then introduced each speaker.

In juniors Cody Shumanski talked about buying a snowmobile with his 4-H steer money, Boden Letkeman  spoke on hatching eggs in an incubator, Cheyanne Roth told about Australian Blue and Red Heeler dogs, Courtney Yasieniuk spoke on hating monday mornings, Cole Reid talked about building forts and snowball fights with his brother, Sierra Bird spoke about her dog Dixie and facts about dogs and Hannah Remus told of her tropical vacation and facts about coral reefs. McKinna Cairns talked about crafts and what she likes to do, Hunter Reid spoke on their three-legged dog Dodger and how he lost his leg, Jamie Attrux talked about how she is different from the rest of her siblings, but proud to be herself and Chevess Bird chose horses as her topic.

Intermediate Kolten Yasieniuk spoke about all the new technology there is in farming today making it more enjoyable. Layne Cairns talked of her Dalmeny basketball team winning district championship, Justin Yasieniuk told of his love for cows and his three favourite times of year working with animals. Abigail Roth spoke on how cowboys change over the years and about cattle drives. Jessica Attrux said never give up on your dreams and told about getting Duke, her dream dog. Rachel Sutherland  spoke on teen years, giving statistics on suicides in teens,  signs to watch for and her own special dream for the future.

Senior Ben Verbonac told of how mobile phones are taking over and about being addicted to them. Brittany Attrux spoke on learning a lesson and of her car accident a few weeks ago. Ariana Mulder chose GMO and added hormones as her topic. She said people need to become more knowledgeable and rethink their lifestyles. Morgan Attrux told of her accident prone family over the years. Tyler Yasieniuk spoke on the record cattle prices, the recent BSE case in Alberta and the effects it could have on markets. Anna Verbonac spoke on her life after high school and her dream for the future. Duncan Sutherland chose to talk about how success should be  earned and how big name professional athletes and their offspring get noticed because of their parents’ notoriety. He said you should have fun and just enjoy the game. 

After a lunch break, the judges gave their comments and were presented with a thank you gift certificate. The placings were announced and each winner got a medallion, treat and prize money while all the participants got a certificate.

In Cloverbuds, Taylor was first and Keardyn second. In Juniors, first went to Hunter, second was Courtney and third was Cheyanne. In intermediates, Rachel was first, second went to Justin and third to Abigail. In seniors Ariana was first, Anna second and Duncan third.

The top two in each category advance to districts in Osler on March 17 at 7 p.m.

The club is holding a steak supper on March 22 at the SaskTel Sports Centre in Saskatoon with a silent auction and tickets at $20 for adults, $15 for children, can be purchased from any 4-H family.

Borden Friendship Club Kaiser winners were Florence Neufeld and John Petrun. The club held their potluck supper Feb. 25 with 29 members attending. Blowing out the candles on the cakes brought by Ann Brand and Mavis Blenkhorn was Mavis. Ruben Rempel was MC for the program, interspersing items with jokes, then the Borden Friendship Singers entertained with five songs with Ed Neufeld playing guitar and sometimes harmonica at the same time. An old lady (Laura Loeppky) came in with a very squeaky cart to go shopping and nothing helped the squeak, then Marlene Derbawka played guitar and sang. Rita Smith and Elizabeth Derksen entertained with a skit on school days and getting dressed in winter to go outside. Ed Neufeld played guitar and sang also playing harmonica, then Marlene joined him for two songs.

Congratulations to the Borden senior boys’ curling team — Dallas, Andrew, Eric and Aidan — who placed second at regionals in Meadow Lake on Feb. 27-28 and are off to provincials in Prince Albert March 6 and 7, along with St. Walburg boys’ team for this region.
