4-H members celebrate achievements

The Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club, with 20 members from Borden, Hafford, Blaine Lake and Leask, held their achievement day June 24 at the Blaine Lake sports ground. In the morning the members wrote their questionnaires, then had a judging competition using four steers. The judge for the day was Curtis Reid from Saskatoon and the leader is Lionel Casavant.

In the Cloverbud division, under eight years old, they showed 2012 calves and they all received a red ribbon. Courtney Yasieniuk was first in the test and judging and third with her record book. Boden Letkeman was second with the test and second in record book. Cheyanne Roth was third in the test, judging and record book. Hunter Reid was first in record book. Ty Shumanski was second in judging, third in the test and fourth with his record book. Hannah Remus was fourth in the test and fifth in her record book.

In the junior category, Rachel Sutherland was first with the test, judging and record book. Justin Yasieniuk was second in judging and record book and fourth in the questionnaire. Kolten Yasieniuk was third in all three. Cole Reid was second in the test and fourth in record book. Abigail Roth was second with her record book. Cody Shumanski and Taran Zerebeski placed fifth and sixth in the classes.

In the intermediate age group, Anna Verbonnac was first in test and record book and second in judging. Tyler Yasieniuk was first in judging and second in the other two. Eric Zerebeski was third in test and judging and Austin Ouellette was third with his record book.

In the senior category, Kira Casavant was first in all three. Clay Casavant was second in record book and third in the other two. Ben Verbonac placed second in test and judging and third in record book.

In the showmanship competition, in seniors, first was Clay, Kira second and Ben third. In intermediates, first was Anna, Tyler second and Austin third. In the juniors, Kolten was first, Rachel second and Cole third Top showman overall was Clay Casavant.

In the grooming competition they had 20 minutes to prepare their yearling for the ring. In seniors first was Kira, Clay was second and Ben third. In intermediate, Anna was first, Tyler second and Austin third. And for juniors Rachel was first, Cole second and Kolten third. Top groomsman, chosen from the three in first place, was Kira Casavant.

There were eight heifers in the yearling heifer class, with no two-year-old or 3-year-old with calf. Grand champion was Anna Verbonac with her Speckle Park animal, Reserve champion was Kolten Yasieniuk, third was Kira and fourth was Rachel.

The 14 steers were divided into three classes and in class 1 first went to Tyler Yaseniuk and Cody Shumanski, second to Cole Reid, third to Ben and fourth to Rachel. In class 2 Anna and Kira were first, Kolten was second, Taran third and Abigail fourth. In class 3 first was Clay and Eric, second Justin and third Austin. The two firsts from each class competed and grand champion was Clay with reserve going to Anna.

They had three fun contests ongoing. Guessing the weight of five fathers was Michelle Forseille who guessed 1,126 with the actual weight 1,125. Guessing the weight of a 1,182 pound steer was Anna Verbonac with 1,177 and guessing the number of jujubes in the jar was Dwayne Ouellette with 122. Winning raffle prizes were Dwayne Ouellette, Taylor Reid and Ty Shumanski.

All the members received prize money. The Cloverbuds each got a Frisbee or a football. The first place winners in each age category received 4-H merchandise and plaques or trophies went to Rachel for top record book, Anna for grand champion heifer and overall aggregate, Clay for champion steer and top showman and Kira for top groomsman. The top showman in each class received T-shirts.

The Speckle Park association presented Anna and Ben Verbonac with a jacket and $50 for showing that breed in the 4-H heifer and steer classes.

The members will be competing at the 4-H Regional Beef Show in Saskatoon July 6 to 9, in team grooming July 7, showmanship and heifer classes July 8 and the steer show and sale July 9.
