4-H club gears up for an active season

The Borden 4-H Light Horse Club reorganized the end of September. The executive now are: president - Melissa Saunders, vice-president - Chantelle MacLeod, secretary - Cassidy Serhienko, treasurer - Savannah Sutherland and reporters - Rachel Sutherland, Emma Prescesky, Teaira Tracksell and Spencer Thiessen. Club members are from Borden, Langham, Radisson and Maymont. Leaders are Sonia Sutherland, Taya Richardson and Alana Gunsch.

Club members made halters Nov. 1 and their next meetings are Nov. 22 and a Christmas Party Dec. 13, with meetings held in the Lions' Room at Borden Community Centre.

The Borden Friendship Club held their annual Halloween Tea Oct. 31, serving pie, coffee and tea. There were around 50 in attendance which members were happy with, considering the roads weren't the greatest and people wanted to be home to hand out treats for the kids. Next upcoming for the seniors is their Kaiser tournament Nov. 13 and a cash/prize bingo Nov. 20, both at 7 p.m.

The Radisson playground committee held a fundraiser Nov. 4 in Radisson Hall, with musical entertainment for the afternoon. First up were Russ Fountain and his group -Jack Karpan on banjo and steel guitar, Chris Schultz on mandolin, Cathy Flath singing with Russ and playing guitar, Irwin Hamp playing bass guitar and Doug Martin playing drums. They played two instrumentals featuring banjo, mandolin and steel guitar and Russ and Cathy sang eight country and western songs.

Next up was Jon Sloan of Wilkie playing guitar and singing, with his partner Thelma Boychuk playing guitar and singing harmony. Russ accompanied them on bass guitar for a set of nine songs.

There was a break for coffee, tea and dainties and to buy 50/50 tickets, then, from Borden, a group with Glen Julseth playing guitar and singing, Joan Julseth singing and playing keyboard and daughter Krista singing entertained with a number of well-known pieces.

The 50/50 draw was made and winning $122.50 was Diane Wiebe of Radisson. Gerald Wiebe of Radisson played guitar and sang a number of songs to close out an enjoyable afternoon. The playground committee raised $1,092. Thanks to all who attended and to the performers and a big thanks to Russ Fountain who organized the musical groups.

The Borden senior boys hosted a five-team volleyball tournament in Colonsay Nov. 3. They won all their games but the final against Hepburn who captured first place with Borden second. The senior boys' conference finals are Nov. 10. Regionals are Nov. 17 and provincials Nov. 24. Good luck to the senior girls' and senior boys' teams as they compete in the coming weeks.

This week Borden School Remembrance Day service is Nov. 6. There is no school Nov. 9 (PD day) or Nov. 12 (for Nov. 11). With Nov. 11 falling on a Sunday this year, many of the businesses, banks and the health clinic at Borden will be closed Nov. 12.

The Saskatoon Fall Fair starts Nov. 8 and there will be exhibitors from Borden having animals in. Clythemane Shorthorns, owned by the Sutherlands, and usually Gary and Sheri Nickel along with Barry and Renita Saunders have commercial and purebred cattle entered.
