UPS Teacher Glenna Zamulinksi leads the students out on the annual Terry Fox School Walk as part of the school's in motion program and to build relationships with the community by having students invite community members to join them on the afternoon's events.

On their website, the Province of Saskatchewan states, "We have phenomenal teachers working here in Saskatchewan. I have seen great things happening in classrooms across the province and heard impressive stories about teachers who really are making a difference in the lives of students."

The website adds, "We need to take opportunities like Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week to highlight and thank our teachers and support staff for their hard work and dedication. They all play integral roles in the success of our students."

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is a national week of recognition that reminds others of the personal and professional contributions teachers and school staff make to children and their education. This national week of designation has been declared for over 25 years. It is hoped the declaration will inspire parents, families and the community to realize and recognize the success of teacher/student relationships, in addition to the positive impact these people have on students in both their personal and academic success.

All it takes is a keen awareness of the environments you will see teachers and staff in. They can be seen at the schools long before morning classes, after the dismissal bell rings and even into evenings and weekends. Many of them are coaching not only kids' sports in the schools but other sporting programs within the community. They are on boards, volunteer for community projects and activities and don't hesitate to answer a school-related question at the rink or the ball diamonds.

These staff have the schools in our communities offer much more than just education for our children. They ensure the schools and their students are part of the community culture.

Take for example, the annual Christmas concert. For generations, this event has been highly anticipated and always thoroughly enjoyed. It is presented after much preparation and practice by teachers and students and put on for the sole purpose of entertaining parents, grandparents and interested residents who enjoy the song, dance and live theatre these productions offer.

There is also the annual music festival. Our schools are committed to enter at least one or more numbers each year in song, choral speaking and even music instrument pieces. The children learn and rehearse their pieces to present, and it can be part of the music curriculum in their respective schools. The audience gets to enjoy the finished product as they attend different venues in the annual music festival performances.

Another branch of the music festival performance is the annual carol festival that takes place in December that always includes school performances on their program.

These are programs that can't be successful without the teachers and staff who dedicate themselves to them.

Whenever a large scale competition was entered into in Unity, for example, the schools were the first place called to "rally the troops" for participation in either aerial photographs, or spirit events, or voting processes. Participation by teachers wasn't limited to directives given to students, but rather leading by example by dressing up in their craziest Rider gear or heading onto a slushy field for a photo - directing students to line up enthusiastically for a shot at a community prize.

Classes travel to senior homes to take their classroom work to those unable to get out much. There, the students learn about their history first-hand, gain experience and wisdom from a grandparent-like role model or simply get to enjoy the company of another generation. Senior high students offer a kind smile and gentle hand to volunteer with a resident at long term care. All efforts are inspired by a teacher.

Support staff aren't in the background either. They have coached teams, rallied participants on spirit days, helped host an anniversary or event at the school and aid in looking after the injured or ill. In addition to their work with the students in class, their duties are also plentiful.

Events like welcome back breakfasts, track and field days, field trips or ski trips - they are fun for the students because everyone at the school plans, organizes, works a station and ensures every participant enjoys their day. Fun days fuel work energy in the classroom.

Whether it's building relationships in their community through an event within the school or having students attend an event outside of the school, it all comes about because a school's teacher and/or staff member presented the idea and helped make it happen.

This is in addition to teaching our kids every day. Sending them off from elementary school with the skills needed to be successful in high school. From high school, providing them with the tools necessary to leave high school for post-secondary education or the workforce. Encouraging them to be their best and smiling in the background at their success when it comes.

School community councils, school divisions and parent groups commit to recognizing teachers and staff during National Teacher/Staff Appreciation week. A variety of activities are held at schools to appreciate all these people do for our students.

At Unity Public School, the SCC organizes supervision each day knowing staff don't often enjoy a full lunch break as they are either giving extra help to a student in need or dashing into the hallways or playgrounds for supervision. The UPS SCC also organizes a week of noon meals for the staff to enjoy, as well as the division office bringing lunch in on one of these days to help recognize and say "thank you."

At Unity Composite High School, there are some families who bring treats into the staff room. The SCC and school division also provide a meal during the week.

St. Peter's SCC and parent group also organize a number of recognition ideas that demonstrate how appreciative they are of things the staff and teachers do all year-round at St. Peter's school. In addition some fun events at St. Peter's are held with the students so the staff and students can celebrate together.

Luseland School are always thrilled to enjoy a couple of meals during the week, provided by their school community council as well as by Living Sky School Division.

Norman Carter School in Wilkie says they too are royally treated with goodies in the staff room all week, as well as with a noon meal organized by the PACT committee made up of volunteer parents from the school. In addition, Living Sky School Division also brings in a lunch as a thank you to the staff and teachers. Supervision on those lunch days is provided by the parents.
