HUMBOLDT, MUENSTER, LAKE LENORE — Humboldt Collegiate Institute and Lake Lenore School were among the area centres of learning to post impressive results at last weekend’s provincial track and field meet.
With three individual medal winners, Lake Lenore placed second in the 1A category in Regina. HCI student-athletes won two individual medals and finished fourth in 4A. Muenster School was sixth in 1A.
LeRoy’s Dayton Bunyan won gold in junior boys shot put. Cara Dobrohoczki of Middle Lake bested the field in senior girls quadathlon. The event included 100m, shot put, long jump, and 800m.
The HCAA 4x100 boys relay squad won silver. It consisted of Dylan Smith (HCI), Dexter Gerwing (Lake Lenore), Josh Cataros (Strasbourg), and Conner Flahr (Raymore). In the girls 4x400 relays, HCAA earned bronze with a team of Alexus Roach (HCI), Claire Moorman (Lake Lenore), Cara Dobrohoczki (Middle Lake), and Kira Wignes (Viscount).
HCI
“HCI had a fantastic showing this season,” coach Nicole Unrau said. “We took a record 23 athletes to provincials, and the experience was outstanding for all athletes. Horizon Central Athletic Association also won the honor of most points per 1,000 students.”
HCI earned two individual bronze medals in field events. Maya Mortenson was third in intermediate girls discus. In intermediate boys shot put, Thomas Ries won bronze.
Lake Lenore
Coach Curtis Strueby saw a strong outing from Lake Lenore’s five student-athletes at provincials. The team had eight top seven finishes.
“The performance of all our athletes was exceptional,” Strueby said. “One of the best I have seen in my career. There were many personal bests set, which led to great placings. And of course, that lead to the team silver medal.”
Claire Moorman recorded four top seven places. Those included winning silver in the 400m and bronze in the 800m at the intermediate girls level. She came in third in aggregate standings with 53 points – just one behind the two student-athletes who tied with 54.
“She ran the 400, 800, 1500, and 3000,” Strueby said. “That’s very hard to do, let alone do well. It was capped off by a bronze in the 4x400 relay.”
Andrei Aquino earned a silver medal in junior boys javelin. Dexter Gerwing accumulated valuable points for the team with a fifth place in the hurdles and finishing seventh in the 100m in the senior boys ranks.
Muenster School
Among the top placings for Muenster School were Riley Sylvestre, seventh, senior boys javelin; and Paige Wuchner, seventh, senior girls triple jump.
