NIPAWIN – The LP Miller Comprehensive School Bears senior girls' volleyball team won gold at this year's 4A provincials.
Kevin Stene is a teacher at LP Miller, head coach and has coached volleyball for 22 years. Nicole Moore is the assistant coach. Moore started coaching this year and Stene credits her of a fabulous job. As far as Stene is aware, LP Miller has never won a girls' provincial championship.
North Battleford's John Paul II Collegiate came in second and the Moose Jaw Vanier Collegiate Institute came in third.
Stene said they had a hard fought battle against John Paul II from North Battleford. The Bears won in the third set of the match with a score of 18-16.
The team consists of: Ksenia Martens, Paige Watson, Rael Aasen, Maressa Stene, Hayley Demmans, Jayden Spice, Martina Moore, Amaris Grandfield, Lauren Froehlich, Cassidy Vansteelandt and Mikayla Jackson
LP Miller played JPII several times throughout the season and had many close games. Three of the top four teams came out of the same round robin pool; Meadow Lake, JPII and LP Miller. In 2019, LP Miller were in the gold medal match against Moose Jaw Vanier and lost.
“We ended a wonderful season of travelling all over the province competing against the very best teams,” Stene said. “I am proud to say that we got to compete with the 5A gold medal champions from St. Mary's in Prince Albert and the 3A gold medal champions from Lanigan. I am also proud of each and every one of these young ladies for their commitment and sacrifice, both are needed in order to play in the final game of the season.”
