TRENTON, Ont. – Local army cadet, Samuel Benjamin of 572 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Humbolt, is spending his summer jumping into the unknown during the four-week Basic Parachutist Course at Trenton Cadet Training Centre in Trenton, Ont.

Following a rigorous and competitive selection process, including intensive fitness testing and medical screening, Benjamin was just one of 48 cadets from across Canada selected for the course this summer.

“I am most excited for the jump stage of the course. We will be putting in a lot of work to make sure we can meet the standards, and the feeling of seeing your work pay off is always amazing,” said Benjamin.

Just last year Benjamin earned his power pilot wings through the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Program, something few achieve. He will be one of a few pilots who are excited to be “jumping from a perfectly good airplane.”

Benjamin joined cadets seven years ago as an air cadet in Tisdale and will be aging out of the program in October.

“I plan to stay involved with my corps as a civilian volunteer to mentor the young cadets and hopefully even inspire a few to pursue the para course.”

Attending summer training is one of many activities available to youth at local, regional and national levels in the Canadian Cadet Program year-round. The cadet program is open to all youth between the ages of 12-18 years old and develops confident, self-sufficient leaders who form lasting friendships and are engaged in their communities while promoting physical fitness, healthy living and fostering an interest in the activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
