HUMBOLDT — A lifelong educator and long time school board trustee was remember at Horizon School Division's first board meeting of the school year.
This fall would have marked Jim Hack's 45th year as part of the Horizon School Division. He was a classroom teacher and principal of Foam Lake. Hack was elected onto the Horizon Board of Education in 2009 and served as Board chair from 2011 to 2023. Hack passed away unexpectedly suddenly on July 28.
Lanigan School
The new Lanigan School construction has begun with an official sod turning ceremony in the spring. To date, site clearing, mobilization and the installation of foundation pilings has started.
Byelection
An byelection for subdivision 10, the Foam Lake–Ituna area, will be held on Dec. 6. Nomination packages will be available shortly by contacting the Horizon School Division office. A nomination deadline is set for Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
Celebration day
Horizon staff and Board members gathered for an annual celebration day. This day recognized student musicians and singers, recognition of staff and trustees for years of service as well as teaching awards.
Logan Banadyga was inducted into the 2023 Wall of Fame. Banadyga graduated from Wadena Composite High School who gained a love for science. He has since earned his Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Immunology and Infection before completing his PH.D in Virology at the University of Alberta. Banadyga runs a research group dedicated to studying Ebola virus and its many cousins. Banadyga has become a national and international expert in these viruses, and his research has improved the understanding of these pathogens and advanced the ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent the diseases they cause.

The 2023-24 Horizon Board meeting were also set for the following dates: Sept. 20, Oct. 16, Nov. 8, Dec. 20, Jan. 17, Feb. 28, March 20, April 16, May 15 and June 19.
