MEACHAM - A man has been arrested following a report of an armed robbery.

On April 1 at approximately 11:45 a.m., Humboldt RCMP received a report of an armed robbery on Highway 5, approximately five kilometres west of the Highway 5 and Highway 2 junction, near Meacham.

Officers responded and determined an adult male in a truck was pulled over on the side of Highway 5, when a male suspect approached his vehicle. The male suspect assaulted the male in the truck with a weapon and stole his vehicle. The male suspect left the vehicle he was originally travelling in at the scene; that vehicle was determined to have been reported as stolen in Saskatoon previously. The injured male reported non-life threatening injuries to police.

While responding to the initial scene, officers received a report of a robbery at a business located near the junction of Highway 16 and Highway 2. The male suspect left in a truck heading southbound on Highway 2.

Shortly after, officers located the stolen truck on Highway 2 north of Watrous. Officers engaged their emergency equipment and initiated a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. Officers followed the vehicle, which abruptly reversed and narrowly missed hitting police vehicles several times. The vehicle also swerved to avoid a tire deflation device officers set up in an attempt to stop it.

Eventually, the truck came to a stop. Officers told the male he was under arrest. He resisted. Officers deployed a conducted energy weapon and the male was arrested.

Wakaw, Humboldt, Watrous, Â鶹´«Ã½AVey, Saskatoon and Craik RCMP, along with Prince Albert RCMP and Regina Police Service Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) assisted in this investigation.

As a result, a 30-year-old man, from Keeseekoose First Nation, is charged with:

  • one count, robbery with a weapon;
  • one count, resist/obstruct peace officer;
  • one count, assault with a weapon;
  • one count, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
  • one count, flight from peace officer; and
  • one count, theft.

The suspect appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 2.
