City of Humboldt to host FireFit championship

The competition will be at the Uniplex parking lot and the public is encouraged to watch and enjoy the competition.

The popularity of the FireFit competition has grown over the past 25 years and visits every province in Canada. 

HUMBOLDT – The City of Humboldt will be hosting the 2024 FireFit Regional Championship on Aug. 24. 

The local organizing committee, composed of members of the Humboldt Fire Department and Saskatchewan Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Network, are hosting the popular event. Competitors will be competing in the FireFit relay and the FireFit Tech2 Relay.

The FireFit relay consists of three- to five-person teams completing seven tasks.  

  1. Hi-Rise / Stairs Up 

  1. Donut Roll Pull 

  1. Stairs DOWN 

  1. Force Machine 

  1. Run Hydrants 

  1. Hose Drag / Show Water 

  1. Victim Rescue 

The FireFit Tech2 Relay consists of two-person teams and is a technical race that features a cylinder exchange at the halfway point. This race is fast but demands concentration and teamwork. Each team member does one half of the course (front or back) and working together to complete a 'Quick Change' of an air cylinder.

Mike Kwasnica, Director of Protective Services for the City of Humboldt said, “August 1994 saw the first Canadian National FireFit competition held at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) in Vancouver. During the 15 days of the PNE approximately 50,000 spectators enjoyed the event.” 

Kwasnica said with the success of the PNE event, seven FireFit events were scheduled and held from coast to coast in 1995 with over 715 competitors from more than 105 fire departments participating.   

The popularity of the FireFit competition has grown over the past 25 years and visits every province in Canada. With the popularity of their annual broadcasts, aired on TSN, OLN & RDS, FireFit has become known not only in Canada but worldwide. Competitors come from every province and territory in Canada as well as the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, England and the Middle East.

Kwasnica said that no Humboldt firefighters have ever competed in these competitions before this year.   

The competition will be at the Uniplex parking lot booked as the location and Kwasnica encourages the public to come watch and enjoy the competition. 

 Competitors that win will go onto the FireFit World’s & Canadian National Championships taking place in Kamloops, B.C. from Sept.r 25 to 29. 

This is FireFit’s 32nd year of bringing competitions across Canada. A spokesperson for the FireFit organization said they are in the process of building their 2025 schedule and all information about the event can be found on . They plan to announce PoliceFit and MedicFit in 2025.
