Carrot River and Melfort locals nominated for Sask Sport awards

Julie Kozun and Tyrell Sawatzky have been nominated for the 2025 Saskatchewan Sport Awards.

As the only Saskatchewan athlete on Canada’s Paralympic volleyball team, she was able to bring back a bronze medal from the 2024 games. 

MELFORT – Melfort local, Julie Kozun, and Carrot River coach, Tyrell Sawatzky, have been nominated for the Saskatchewan Sport Awards. 

The awards ceremony is in its 40th year. Sawatzky grew up in Carrot River. He has been nominated for Coach of the Year award. 

Sawatzky received a gold medal in the Western Canadian Summer Games in 2015. He also received a bronze medal in the Canada West Shot put event. The Town of Carrot River said, “As a high school student Tyrell enjoyed football, basketball and track and field. He graduated from Carrot River High School and pursued a degree in Education while honing his athletic skills in track & field throwing events. He now teaches and coaches other young people to strive for excellence.” 

In 2024, Sawatzky was recognized as Saskatchewan Athletics’ Coach of the Year for his effort in guiding Para athletes to set Canadian records in the F13 javelin, as well as the F56 javelin and shot put events. Other nominees for the Coach of the Year Award, include: Ryan Jones and Mary Carroll. 

Kozun has been nominated for Female Athlete of the Year. As the only Saskatchewan athlete on Canada’s Paralympic volleyball team, she was able to bring back a bronze medal from the 2024 games. 

“Each award recipient and finalist represents the perseverance of our province and the contributions that are made to nurture sport provincially, nationally and internationally. Saskatchewan is proud of those who represent the province at all levels of competition,” said Luke Flegel, Volunteer Board Chair for Sask Sport 

The 40th annual awards ceremony will be held in Saskatoon on Jan. 30.
