Bjorkdale News: Strong showing for locals at cutting horse event

The Saskatchewan Cutting Horse Association presented Austyn Schpansky with a senior youth champion award, Vidalia van Hasstert with a junior youth champion award and Avalene van Hasstert with a reserve junior youth award.

BJORKDALE — The Saskatchewan Cutting Horse Association (SCHA) highlighted a few local Bjorkdale kids.

On Jan. 21 in Regina, they held their annual meeting and awards banquet in Regina. Austyn Schpansky won the senior youth champion award, Vidalia van Hasstert won the junior youth champion award and Avalene van Hasstert won the reserve junior youth award. The champion awards are given to competitors that have earned the most points over the course of the SCHA show season. Vidalia and Avalene finished fourth and sixth in the Canadian Cutting Horse Association. Congrats!

The Valley Inn hosted the first “Chase the Ace” draw on Friday, Jan. 20. Carman Cote won the first draw and 20 per cent of the total pot. He did not pick the ace of spades and so the pot will continue to grow for next Fridays draw. Every Friday at the Valley Inn at 8:30 p.m. All the proceeds will go towards the Bjorkdale Curling Club.

The Bjorkdale Curling Club hosted their first Farmers' Bonspiel of the season with five rinks in attendance. The Hamel rink took first place.

The Bjorkdale skating rink was busy all weekend long. The combined Bjorkdale/Arborfield under 11 team played Kinistino on Friday night in a close match up ending in a 4 – 2 win for Kinistino. Grace Mohr had her debut as an official and did a great job alongside Tyson Wearing, Bjorkdale’s referee-in-chief. On Sunday, Jan. 22 the Bjorkdale under 9 team played against Kinistino who was an evenly matched game with the final score of 7 – 5 in favor of the visitors. The under 9 Bjorkdale Bruins head to Porcupine Plain on Saturday, Jan. 28 for a tournament.
