The family is very saddened to announce that Mrs. Matilda Margart Pape, 89 years of St. Mary's Villa Humboldt passed away at her residence on Thursday, January 2, 2014. Tillie was born on June 21, 1924 to Frank and Matilda (nee Kapfer) Hartl in the Marysburg District. She obtained her education at Marysburg and Bright Valley Schools. At the age of 13 her mother suddenly passed away and she began helping with domestic duties and caring for her eight siblings. She later met Joseph Berscheid at a dance and they were married on October 18, 1943 at St. Anthony's R.C. Church in Lake Lenore. They were blessed with two sons, George and Roger. Unfortunately after being married for 12 years Joe died suddenly and unexpected at the age of 36 leaving Tillie a very young widow. She later moved into Lake Lenore. She met Michael Pape and they were married. The family then moved to a farm near Stoney Lake. Later they were blessed with a son Michael Jr. Tillie and Mike loved to square dance and danced their way to many communities in the area. She was a very skilled seamstress and loved to sew many items for her family. Cooking was another love she was very well known for her specialty, homemade buns and a special apple cake. Tillie always kept a large manicured garden filled with an abundance of produce, which kept the boys busy, especially on the weekends. In her retirement she would be faithful to her weekly bingo outings, where she loved to visit and have a good laugh with her friends. Tillie had a deep faith and a special love for her grandchildren they meant the world to her. In 2000 Mike passed away and Tillie was left alone again. She lived with Roger and Debbie for a while. Later she moved to Birch Manor in Middle Lake. In 2003 she moved to St. Mary's Villa where she resided until present. A very generous, caring woman, Tillie will always be remembered for her love of caring for others. Tillie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her two sons, six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren: Roger(Debbie) Berscheid of Humboldt and family Jason Berscheid of Humboldt and Cathy Berscheid(Dennis O'Brien) and his daughter Adriana of Newfoundland; Mike(Maryann) Pape of Humboldt and family, Michael Pape(Amber) of Allan and Alana Pape(Graham) of Lethbridge, AB; and George's children Tammy(Miles) Oberstrich of Wainwright and family, Steven(Emily) Smood of Saskatoon and children Karter and Nicholas, Johnny(Willow) Smood of Grande Prairie, AB and Adam Smood of Red Deer, AB; and James(Sandy) Berscheid and family, Jillian Berscheid and William Berscheid all of New Brunswick; numerous nieces and nephews and Mike's niece Liz Berting. Tillie was predeceased by her parents: Frank and Matilda Hartl; husbands: Joseph Berscheid and Michael Pape; son, George Berscheid and seven siblings: Joe Hartl, Annie(Mike) Graf, Frank (Frances) Hartl, Catherine(Frank) Loessl, Rose(Albert) Kolbeck, Anthony(Viola) Hartl and Caroline(Richard) Gerwing; Mike's niece Barb Kienlen. A Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Augustine R.C. Church Humboldt celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Cremation followed with interment at St. Anthony's R.C. Cemetery Lake Lenore, at a later date. Memorial donations in Tillie's memory may be directed to St. Anthony's R.C. Cemetery Fund, or St. Mary's Villa Foundation. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to MALINOSKI & DANYLUIK FUNERAL HOME Humboldt.
