Mary Rose Schmid

June 3, 1922 – February 14, 2016

The death of Mrs. Mary Rose (nee Lueke) (Teiber) Schmid of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Sunday, February 14, 2016. She was 93 years of age. Mary was born on Saturday, June 3, 1922, to John and Apolonia (nee Bernauer) Lueke at home on their farm in the Fulda/Willmont district. She grew up there and attended Keller Rural School. After completing her Grade 8 education, Mary was employed as a hired girl for families in the area. Eventually, she met Ferdinand Teiber at a dance in Fulda and, on Tuesday, October 14, 1941, they were married at Willmont. Seven children, five sons and two daughters, were born to them. In 1945, Mary and Ferdinand purchased Philip Bohl’s homestead and farmed there for the next 32 years. In 1973, they retired from farming and moved to Humboldt. Mary worked at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in various positions for ten years. After retiring from there, she spent innumerable hours volunteering at St. Mary’s Villa from 1983 to 2008. Ferdinand passed away on Sunday, November 16, 1980. On Saturday, September 3, 1983, Mary and Alphonse Schmid, who had lost his wife in February 1982, were married. Both Mary and Alphonse enjoyed music and sang with the Slough Grass Singers. They also helped with the inserts at the Prairie Messenger. Mary was a long-time member of St. Augustine Parish and the C.W.L. On Tuesday, November 27, 2007, Mary was widowed again. In February 2012, she moved to Caleb Village in Humboldt. Throughout her life, Mary enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. She played the guitar, was an avid gardener and, most of all, had a passion for baking. As well, she loved outings to bazaars, sports days, and shopping, and trips to Denver, California, and British Columbia.
