The passing of Marie Wehage (nee Poppel) of Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at the age of 90 years. Marie was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born on December 7, 1924, to Martin and Rose (nee Beumler) Poppel in Pilger, SK, and attended Saint Bernard School. On July 22, 1946, Marie married Walter Wehage and together they purchased their own farm in the Verndale area, northwest of Lake Lenore. There they opened land, and raised a family of nine children: George, Donald, Joseph, Clifford, Robert, Kevin, Geraldine, Cynthia and David. In 1968, Marie and Walter bought and operated a small hotel in Pilger. In 1981, they semi-retired into Middle Lake, where they managed the Lucien Lake Regional Park for a number of years. Marie also was a cook at Bethany Pioneer Village for a period of time. She was a member of the CWL and Bethany Auxilary. Maries’ first love was her family. Her hobbies included crocheting until her fingers bled, reading the newspaper, playing bingo, curling in her younger years and “cheering” every curling game possible on TV. She spent her summers on her scooter down at the park with family and friends while watching ballgames was a favorite pastime. Marie will be lovingly remembered by her children; George (Estelle) and family Sheri (Jay) and children Logan (Lux) and Colby Sparrow, Tamara (Christopher) and children Noah, Josh and Broden Marshall, Janelle (Brad) and children Jaiden and MacKinley Chisholm; Donald (2008) (Angie) and family Chad (Jackie) and children Lexie, Connor and Miley, Shawn (Lacey) and son Hunter, Trevor; Joseph (Faye Prentice) and family Amy (Jason) and children Cassidy and Katie Smith, Aron (Annabelle) and family Keegan, Riley, Jake and Daisy; Clifford (1994); Robert (Cathy) and family Tanya (Darren) and son Aidan Kettner, Heather (Steven Pobereznek); Kevin (Susan) and family Kairee (Benji Szautner), Kyle; Geraldine (Domenico) Volponi and daughter Maria; Cynthia (Randy) Meyers and family Kris (Christine) and children Braden and Jackson, Cara (Curt) and children Gracie, Ryder and Sloane Morgan; and David (Charlene) and family Jacob, Dawson and Kalea; and sisters, Caroline Altman, Veronica Matsalla and Ann Wozney. She was predeceased by her husband Walter Wehage (2008); sons Clifford Wehage and Donald Wehage; brothers John Poppel, Bernard (Norma) Poppel, Ed (Lillian) Poppel; and brothers-in-law Allan Altman and Ed Matsalla. The Prayer Service for Marie was held at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, Middle Lake, on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. presided by Nestor Trach. Music ministry was provided by Cathy and Heather Wehage and Lucie Altman; scripture readers were Jacob and Kalea Wehage and Maria Volponi and Kyle Wehage; and intentions was George Wehage. The eulogy was delivered by Susan Wehage. The Funeral Mass was offered at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, on Monday, March 23, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB. Others taking part were Geraldine Volponi and Cynthia Meyers, crossbearers; Cara Morgan and Amy Smith, intentions; Estelle Wehage, Angie Wehage, Faye Prentice, Charlene Wehage and Tanya Kettner, giftbearers; Dawson Wehage, altar server; Fr. Joseph Ackerman, OSB & Mary Ellen LeBrash, Eucharistic ministers; Kairee Wehage and Sheri Sparrow, scripture readers; Cathy and Heather Wehage and Lucie Altman, music ministry; and Wilma Krenn and Bernice Melz, memorial table attendants. Honorary pallbearers were Donald and Clifford Wehage. Active pallbearers were George, Joseph, Robert, Kevin and David Wehage, Chad, Aron, Shawn and Trevor Wehage, Kris Meyers, Domenico Volponi and Randy Meyers. Interment will take place at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Cemetery, Middle Lake, SK. Donations may be directed to the Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund.
