EGGER: Marian Alma

The death of Mrs. Marian Alma (nee Medland) Egger of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Sunday, July 7, 2013. She was 85 years of age. Marian was born on March 15, 1928, to George and Laura (nee Palmer) Medland in Killarney, Manitoba. Killarney is a picturesque farming town in Â鶹´«Ã½AVern Manitoba, about 60 kilometres south of Brandon. Marian was always proud of her Irish and English heritage and of her childhood on the farm. As time passed, getting settled in was not easy for her parents. Marian's father was a farmer and her mother was a country school teacher. Her family was poor during the Dirty Thirties, but it was with many cherished memories of the pioneering days with blacksmiths, harness shops, and work horses. It was way before pulleys, belt tractors and threshers were invented and especially with the modern technology nowadays. It was a lot of fun on the farm in the old days without all these luxuries, however, in 1936, her parents decided to move the family to Killarney to start a new life. Since Marian was born profoundly deaf, she went to the provincial residential School for the Deaf in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the fall of 1935. In a twist of fate, the school was taken over by the Canadian Air Forces during WWII and all students had to be transferred to the Saskatchewan School for the Deaf in Saskatoon in 1940. She graduated just before the war ended in 1945 and decided to become a hairdresser. She went into a successful hairdressing business partnership in Killarney with her close hearing friend, Corinne Cairns, who was fluent in sign language. She then migrated to Regina from Killarney through first marriage and continued to work as a hairdresser until she became a mother to Dale and Scott. Within the local communities, Marian was an active member teaching sign language in different classes in schools as well as being involved with the Lioness Club in Lake Lenore. Both of them, Marian and Ralph, loved being with people and blessed to have close family and friends, many of those whom they met on their extensive travels. It is their wish to thank the Westminster United Church, their ministers, church friends, and interpreters for their kind deeds and support throughout the years. Marian would like to thank Joan Stock, Judy Low, and Rev. Al and Marion Hingley for being her special friends for many years. Marian's special treasure is her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended grandchildren. She was such a wonderful Mom, and a very caring and compassionate person to her family and friends. Above all, Marian would like to thank her family and everyone for a wonderful life. Marian is survived by her husband Ralph; her sons Dale (Leona) and Scott (Sharon); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Vivian Medland of Calgary, AB, and Maureen Medland of Kelowna, BC; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Laura (nee Palmer) Medland; her sister Gene; and by brothers Albert and Gerry. Cremation has taken place. As per Marian's request, there will not be a funeral service.
