Louis Benson of Prince Albert, SK passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at his residence. He was 90 years of age. Louis was born to William and Lucy (nee Nogier) Benson on November 28, 1922 in Humboldt, SK, where he was raised. At the age of 19, in September of 1941, he voluntarily enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He took his basic training in Brandon, Manitoba. He then travelled to Hagersville, Ontario joining the armoury division. In the winter of 1943, he was assigned to the 404 Squadron and landed in Scotland. When the war ended in 1946, Louis returned to Humboldt where he worked at the Co-op Creamery. He met the love of his life, Betty and they were married June 18, 1949. In 1952, he started with the Canadian National Railway where he worked until he retired in 1982. Louis and Betty were blessed with three children. Upon retirement Louis enjoyed looking after his prized potato patch, listening to music, reading westerns, and visiting with family and friends. They remained in Humboldt until 2007 when they relocated to Prince Albert to be closer to their daughter Barbara. Louis was a proud veteran and an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He celebrated 60 years in the Legion in November of 2011. Louis will be sadly missed and always lovingly remembered by his three children, Philip (Lynn) Benson of Regina, SK, Barbara Steen of Prince Albert, Bev (Jerry) Saretsky of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, Brother Wilfred (Dorothy) Benson of Regina and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Betty (nee Brown) Benson (Feb. 10, 2011), parents William and Lucy (nee Nogier) Benson, brother Bill Benson, sister Lucille McCowan, great-granddaughter Jayla Schwedes, and son-in-law Howard Steen. A Celebration of Louis' life was held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #28, Humboldt on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Al Hingley. Soloist was Marj Bodnarchuk. Words of remembrance were delivered by Louis' family. Urnbearer was Kim Kenke. An honor guard was formed by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Humboldt Branch. Interment took place in the Legion section of the Humboldt Public Cemetery, Humboldt. Memorial donations may be made to either the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #28 or the charity of your choice.
