BERSCHEID - The family is very saddened to announce that Mr. Lawrence Berscheid, 79 years, of Humboldt passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. Lawrence was born on March 11, 1932, the youngest son of Joe and Elizabeth (nee Buchholz) Berscheid of Lake Lenore. He obtained his education at the Blume and Lake Lenore Schools and continued to St. Peter's College in Muenster for his grade 12. Immediately after school Lawrence began his 50 plus years of farming. On October 10th 1955 Lawrence married Sheila Moorman at St. Augustine Church in Humboldt. For one year Lawrence and Sheila went to Victoria but the pull of land brought them back to the Saskatchewan Prairies to begin developing their homestead. They were blessed with two sons, Russell and Curtis. Together they farmed in the Lake Lenore area until 2002 when they retired to Humboldt. Lawrence was a very musical man who played by ear and could play a variety of instruments. As a child Lawrence enjoyed visiting neighbours where they would sing and play. At the local dances when the main band would take a break Lawrence would entertain on a variety of instruments. Lawrence loved snowmobiling, in the younger years, riding around the country and attending local poker rallies. As a family they travelled to Hudson Bay and Greenwater and participated in many rallies. Lawrence also participated as a racer in the local Old Times Drag races. This continued into retirement where Lawrence and Sheila shared wonderful times watching snowmobile races on T.V. With Curtis taking over the family farm it made the transition to retirement a little easier. He discovered new talents and in the past few years he became a chef. He loved cooking wonderful dishes for Sheila. Lawrence was a very social man who loved spending time visiting with many people in coffee shops or local businesses. The highlight was his Sunday morning breakfasts with Nap. He was very proud of his sons and their accomplishments and took pride and joy in visiting with them and their families. His grandchildren were his greatest joy. A kind, loving, caring gentle man best describes Lawrence. Lawrence will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, SHEILA Berscheid of Humboldt; two sons, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Russell (Diane) Berscheid of Nashville, TN and family John Glenn of Calgary, AB and daughter Emily Fonda and Kimberly (Dario) Piotto of Saskatoon and son Dante Curtis (Ella) Berscheid of Humboldt and family Justin and Maya; one sister: Marie Berscheid of Weyburn; four sisters and brothers-in-law: Matilda Pape of Humboldt, Josephine Berscheid of Saskatoon, Jim (Karen) Moormann of Fulda and Nap Boutin of Humboldt; numerous special nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends. Lawrence was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Berscheid; three brothers and three sisters: Margaret (Albert) Spengler, Anne (Tony) Yeager, Joseph Berscheid, Albert Berscheid, Sylvester Berscheid and Nikolas (Marcella) Berscheid; sister-in-law Valerie Boutin; and nephew Ross Moormann. A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. from St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church Humboldt presided by Jenny Irwin. Others taking part in the service were organist Marie Aubin, scripture readers Glen Berscheid and Nap Boutin. Words of remembrance were shared by his sons, Russell and Curtis. A Private Funeral Mass was held on Friday, December 16, 2011 at Humboldt District Hospital Chapel celebrated by Fr. Emile April. Others taking part in the mass were: cross bearer Maya Berscheid, intentions Rosemary Possberg, and urn bearer Justin Berscheid. Honorary pallbearers were "All those who shared in Lawrence's life." Interment will follow at a later date. Memorial donations in Lawrence's memory may be directed to Humboldt District Hospital Foundation (General Equipment Fund). Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to MALINOSKI & DANYLUIK FUNERAL HOME Humboldt, SK.
