SZAUTNER: Ken

The peaceful death of Mr. Ken Szautner, 74 years, of Humboldt occurred on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 surrounded by his family. Ken was born on March 17, 1942 to Gesa and Pearl (nee Boehm) Szautner in Humboldt. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Muenster. Meeting Bertha Dobmeier when she was 14, a romance blossomed and they were married on October 27, 1962 in Pilger. They lived in Saskatoon where Ken and Bertha welcomed their first child, Donna. Ken and Bertha then moved to Watson where they welcomed their second child, Dean. They then returned to Humboldt where Ken became the owner of Humboldt Auto Body. Ken was resourceful, and a man of many talents. In 1990, Ken and Bertha realized a life-long dream to live in B.C. and made the decision to move to Kelowna and thoroughly enjoyed their 7 years spent there. Never one to sit idle, Ken worked as a security guard while they lived there and built lasting friendships. Once again, however, they were drawn back to Humboldt in 1997 because their family was expanding with the addition of grandchildren, of which they did not want to miss the enjoyment of watching them grow and be an integral part of their lives. Ken was very proud of his five grandchildren; teasing the granddaughters and talking 鈥淢ustangs鈥 with his grandson. Over the years, the family loved camping and fishing, especially at Kipabiskau Lake where many hours were spent barbecuing, fishing and cruising the lake. Ken鈥檚 family, both his children and grandchildren were the most important part of his life and any time spent together was cherished. Ken enjoyed listening to country music, playing cards and the visiting that accompanied a good game. Ken fought an uphill battle with Crohn鈥檚 disease for over 30 years, working hard to stay as healthy as possible. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Bertha Szautner of Humboldt; their two children and five grandchildren: Donna (Owen) Sarauer of Regina and family Nicole Sarauer of Regina and Stacey Sarauer (Brett) of Calgary; and Dean (Marilyn) Szautner of Melfort and family Chantel Szautner (Max) of Melfort and Dylan Szautner and Christina Szautner, both of Saskatoon; three brothers: Kevin (Doreen) Szautner and Gordon Szautner, both of Muenster and Bruce (Gail) Szautner of Humboldt; sisters-in-law, Irene Szautner and Pat Szautner, both of Humboldt and brother-in-law, Ray Tebbe of Humboldt; numerous nieces, nephews and by many members of the Dobmeier family. Ken was predeceased by his parents, Gesa and Pearl Szautner; an infant daughter in 1964; and three siblings, Harvey Szautner, Marilyn Tebbe and Russell Szautner. The Funeral Mass for Ken was held on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt. Interment followed in St. Augustine Cemetery Columbarium. Memorial Donations in Ken鈥檚 memory may be made to the Crohn鈥檚 and Colitis Canada. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt.
