The passing of John Meckelborg of Muenster, SK, occurred at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK, on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at 79 years of age. John was born on September 21, 1935, to Bernard and Johanna (nee Klinker) Meckelborg at home in the St. Gregor District, SK. His schooling from grades 1 to 4 were taken at St. Gregor School, grades 5 to 9 at St. Gertrude School, and grades 10 to 12 at St. Peter’s College. It was while at St. Peter’s College that he met Margaret Korte and they were married on June 17, 1961 and they were blessed with four children: Neil, Carrie, Shawn and René. Working at construction sites around the province, John first worked at the P.A. Pulp Mill and then on construction of several potash mines as an operator. CN-CP Telecommunications employment saw him moving in various areas of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. It was while they were living in Muenster that John completed his private pilot licence through the Flying School at Lanigan in 1973. In 1974 John took a job as shop foreman for J.I. Case Company in Lethbridge, AB where he achieved international heavy-duty mechanic status as well as Alberta Provincial Heavy Duty Mechanic status. The next 17 years saw John flying back and forth to Rabbit Lake Uranium Mine at Wollaston Lake where he was employed with Cameco as a machinist until March 31, 1995 when he accepted a retirement package, and he was also a volunteer firefighter while employed there. John belonged to the Elks of Canada in Muenster; he also enjoyed going fishing and hunting, and reading westerns. He was a loving husband, father and proud grandfather. John will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of almost 54 years, MARGARET; children Carrie (Michael) Winter; Shawn (Sharmagne) Meckelborg and family, Dyon, Kelsie, Taryn and Rilee; René (Dawn) Meckelborg and family, Kailee and Jayden; and daughter-in-law Carla Meckelborg and family, Anastasia and Nicholas; siblings Ben Meckelborg, Al Meckelborg, Hal (Judy) Meckelborg, Johanna (Bert) Andersson, and Ray (Brigitte) Meckelborg; sister-in-law Dolores Meckelborg; in-laws Benno (Marie) Korte, Helen Bieker, Rose Marie (Maurice) Strueby, Cecilia Nakonechny, Antoinette Prokosch, Anne Trip de roche; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by brothers Alfred and Otto Meckelborg (in infancy), Ewald Meckelborg; sisters-in-law Diane Meckelborg and Kitty Meckelborg; son Neil Meckelborg; brothers-in-law Ken Prokosch, Fred Nakonechny and Ron Bieker; niece Roxanne (nee Strueby) Brule. A Prayer Service for John was held at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Muenster on Friday, February 27, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. presided by Lillian Hinz. The organist was Sheryl Korte, Myrna Britz the music director and the scripture reader was Helen Biecker. The eulogy was delivered by Shawn Meckelborg. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Peter’s Cathedral on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. con-celebrated by Dr. Daniel Muyres, OSB, Fr. Demetrius Wasylyniuk, OSB and Fr. Rudolph Novecosky, OSB. Others taking part were Rilee Meckelborg, crossbearer; Craig Meckelborg and Laura Prokosch, scripture readers; Tanya Schuler, intentions; Rose Marie and Maurice Strueby, giftbearers; St. Peter’s Parish Choir, music ministry; Gail Rueve, director; and Christy Waldner, pianist. Honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in John’s life. Active pallbearers were Bryan Meckelborg, Raymond Strueby, Dyon Meckelborg, Kent Bieker, Vern Meckelborg and Duane Meckelborg. Interment followed at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Muenster. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Peter’s Cemetery Care or Humboldt District Hospital Foundation David Ronald Bell Cardiac Endowment Fund. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
