Helga Marie Davis {nee Amundson }:

Helga was born on November 30, 1923 to Helge & Anna Amundson of Naicam, Saskatchewan. She was the 4th child of eleven, and the first daughter. Helga started school at Home School, a small country school east of Naicam, where she learned English along with her older brothers and soon taught their parents the Canadian language at home. Helga liked school and finished her grade eight before she had to go out to work at the age of fourteen, which was common practice in those days. She worked as a hired girl for various people around Naicam. On February 7, 1944 at age 20 years she married Benjamin Davis and they started their own home west of Naicam on the farm. They both worked very hard on their busy farm, milking several cows, feeding pigs and chickens as well as looking after a huge garden and yard. Mom was comfortable with all these chores and took great pride in producing most of their own food and meat. She grew not only vegetables but lots of flowers. She did huge amounts of canning, freezing and baking. She also loved to knit and sew and made many beautiful cowitchen and siwash sweaters as well as homemade quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. She had hundreds of chickens in the summers and butchered them each fall. Often her younger sisters and brothers would be on hand to help with many of these big jobs. The whole family worked together back and forth and had many good times. The rural community was also very strong and Mom belonged to the Byng Ladies club for 69 years. They had many good times together and we remember the Christmas concerts and card parties, the summer picnics and mock weddings at Byng school. She had a wonderful community to live in with so many good neighbours and friends. She also belonged to the Coop Guild for many years and was a 4-H leader for a few years. Both Mom & Dad supported the 4-H club and we the children benefitted by each being able to be members for many years and take many projects. Mom led the Outdoor cookery and knitting projects and loved every minute of it. In 1976, Mom & Dad built a new home in Naicam and moved to town to their semi-retirement. They still enjoyed their garden and yard but on a smaller scale. They now had alittle more time for travelling and made a few trips to Hawaii, Alaska, and Norway. They enjoyed golfing with some of their family and visiting with their neighbours . Mom, who always said she felt better when she was busy, took on the job of caretaker for the Naicam Town Hall for about 10 years and Dad drove school bus and helped Eric on the farm for a few more years. Mom did lots of babysitting for her grandchildren and was always happy to do so. She helped us out a lot. She was always happiest when her house was full of family. We all have many favorite memories of our Mom and Grandma. As they aged they downsized to a smaller house and then moved to Churchview Lodge. The final move for Mom came in September 2009 when we moved her to Chateau Providence Care Home in St. Brieux. She spent the last 3 and 1/2 years there and was blessed by good care and company with the Staff and Residents there. She passed away on March 17th, 2013. with family at her side. We will miss her very much.
