The sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. Hedwig Schreiner, 91 years, of Humboldt occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Monday, May 30, 2011. Hedwig was born on July 12, 1919 in Nikolausdorf bei Garrel, Oldenburg Germany to Anton and Maria (nee Nordenbrock) Kloppenburg, the fifth of seven children. Hedwig attended grades one to three in Germany and then came to Canada with her parents and continued her education at St. Augustine School in Humboldt until grade eight. Due to her mother's illness she had to quit school and stay home to help with her siblings and domestic duties. It was while she was attending a vocational school taking home economics that she met Lawrence Schreiner while he was taking a mechanics course. Their courtship progressed and they were wed on September 15, 1941 at St. Augustine Church in Humboldt. This union was blessed with six daughters. They ran a mixed farm one mile east of Burton Lake School. In 1960, they moved to the old Nicolaus Schreiner homestead, with the four youngest girls so they could be closer to school. They retired to Humboldt in 1982 where they built a new house. They enjoyed their life in Humboldt, spending many hours entertaining friends and relatives with delicious meals, great visits or good card games that included a wonderful midnight lunch. Hedwig was an accomplished and adventurous cook. She loved spending time in the garden and tending her flowers. A self taught seamstress she created beautiful outfits for her daughters and herself. Hedwig had many hobbies including knitting, quilting, crocheting and rug hooking. In 1973 Hedwig met her goal of obtaining her grade 12 by writing and passing the GED exam. She remained proficient in both oral and written German which she used to stay connected to her family in Germany and Brazil. Her thirst for knowledge continued throughout her entire life. For her 90th birthday, her family gave her a computer; she enjoyed reading her e-mail, googling and playing word games. Lawrence and Hedwig were fortunate to be able to travel to many parts of Canada, the USA and Germany, but her favourite trip was to Brazil where she met with her uncle Bernard Kloppenburg's family. In 1996 Lawrence passed away and Hedwig continued to live independently until her death. Hedwig always presented herself with dignity and grace; she was always very attractively dressed. We will miss her gentle, caring and loving personality who treated everyone equally with the utmost of respect. Hedwig will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her six daughters, 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren: Annette (William) Krayetski of Prince Albert, SK and family, Brent (Jeanette) Krayetski of Prince Albert, SK and children, Travis of Edmonton, AB and Vanessa (Matthew) of Cold Lake, AB and Suzanne (Shawn) Krienke of Calgary, AB and children, Emily and Eric; Lorraine Hartmann of Grand Forks, BC; Mary (Robert) Cadman of Grand Forks, BC and family, Tanya Krueger (Brian Asmundson) of Yellowknife, NT and sons Roman and Carson, Robert (Jacqueline) Kossick of Edmonton, AB and daughters, Danaea and Cayley; Ayesha Schreiner (Didier Petrus) of Montreal, PQ and family, Yasin of Montreal, PQ, Junayd of Montreal, PQ, Sumayyah of Malang, Indonesia, Muhammad of Storr, CT, Hasan of Tarim, Yemen and Mustafa of Montreal, PQ; Eileen Woodham of Humboldt, SK and sons, Steven Woodham of Montreal, PQ and Matthew Woodham (Chelsea) of Saskatoon, SK; and Donna Schreiner of Regina, SK; sisters-in-law, Anne Kloppenburg of Vernon, BC and Vera Selzer of Kelowna, BC and by numerous nieces and nephews.
