MUGGLI: Harold John
1938-2013
Harold passed away on November 20 at the age of 75, after a 5 year battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marge, three children: Tracy (Derron Hoover), Heath (Lori Coolican), and Lana; and seven grandchildren: Ayden Draude, Eli Hoover, Jessica Hoover (Blair), Brett Muggli, Jace Muggli (Jasmine), Damon Muggli, Kade Muggli; and eight brothers and sisters: Agnes (Arnold) Korte, Helen Weber, Rita Wallace, Leona (Ray) DeCaire, Tony (Maxcine) Muggli, Allan (Leona) Muggli, Ronald (Rosemarie) Muggli and Vera (Boyd) Foster; numerous nieces and nephews and members of the Bobinski family. Harold was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Anna (Muench) Muggli; brother, Raymond; sister, Renilda (Don) Foster and brother-in-law, Scott Wallace. Harold farmed until 2000 with his brothers Tony and Ron, caring for the farming operation established by their father Ernest near Muenster in the 1930s. They grew it into a successful grain farm. Harvest was Harold's favourite time of year and when his special sense of humour shone the most. He also worked many winters in St. Gregor at Western Industries. Harold was a loyal member of the Elks club in Muenster, serving a term as Exalted Ruler for the club. He was also known to most as the "Iceman". Nobody would dispute that Harry/Hal/Muggs knew what he was doing when it came to making and maintaining curling ice. He could be found late in the evening torching and scraping the ice to ensure the best two-sheet surface in Saskatchewan. He even had a special cot for sleepovers when the nights went a bit long at the Muenster Curling Club! He loved to play the game and represented Saskatchewan twice as provincial Elks champion (1978 National runner-up & 1995) and as the provincial Farmers champion in 1988. He particularly enjoyed his many years with his buddies travelling to Melfort for Super League, always followed by mixed nuts after a loss, pickled herring if they won and late-night sausage, buns and a few rounds of smear at the farm regardless of the outcome of the game. Summers were spent watching baseball and base umping. He loved to watch the Red Sox. A few years ago he was able to travel to Toronto to see his beloved Blue Jays play 3 games. He also loved the annual fishing trips to remote places with some of his buddies, and keeping the large garden completely weed-free. Harold enjoyed singing and was a member of the Muenster church choir for decades. For years he fell asleep listening to opera on CBC radio, even though country music was probably his favourite. He loved to visit with his children and grandchildren, especially when everyone took the opportunity to watch the Riders together. We will miss his spontaneous sense of humour and his resilience. Memorial donations may be made to Muenster Curling Club or St. Peter's Cemetery Fund. A celebration of Harold's life was held at St. Peter's Cathedral on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 10:00 am.
