Greta Gertrude (nee Harder) Barnes

May 31, 1923 - October 14, 2012

The death of Mrs. Greta Gertrude (nee Harder) Barnes of Saskatoon, SK, (and formerly of Humboldt, SK), occurred at her residence on Sunday, October 14, 2012. She was 89 years of age. Greta was the eldest child of Nathan and Caroline (nee Scheiber) Harder and grew up on their homestead farm in the Irish Colony, south of St. Gertrude, Saskatchewan, and attended the Caseyville School there. When she was finished school, she moved to Humboldt and worked at Richman's Department Store. Several years later, she moved to Vancouver and worked for Pacific Veneer. In the early 1950's, she returned to Humboldt, and fell in love with Wilfred "Barney" Barnes. Greta and Barney were married in Saskatoon on June 30th, 1954. Together they ran Barney's Grocery Store until his passing in 1971. Greta continued working in Humboldt at various jobs, including Eatons, Ross' Jewellers, and Farmer John's until she retired in 1988. She enjoyed playing cards, and was a member of a bridge club for many years. Greta also loved to crochet and quilt. She was a member of the CWL at St. Augustine Parish. Many of her days were spent visiting and playing cards at the Seniors Hall, and she enjoyed her numerous trips to the casino, both in Saskatchewan and the United States. Greta will be sadly missed by her loving family: Gerry (Kath) Barnes of Prince Albert, SK; Neil (Laverne) Barnes of Prince Albert, SK; Beverly (Bob) Sollosy of Saskatoon, SK; Diane (Peter) Weiland of Saskatoon, SK; step-children: Shirley (Murray) Parker of Red Deer, AB; and Dr. Robert (Norma) Barnes of Port Rowan, ON. Greta was also a proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and nine step-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers: Tim Harder of Vancouver, BC; and John Harder of Edmonton, AB; sisters: Ann Casey of Cranbrook, BC; and Rhea (Bill) Lapachuck of Edmonton, AB; sister-in-law, Linda Harder of Cranbrook, BC; and by brother-in-law, Jim Creelman of Vancouver, BC. Greta was predeceased by her husband Barney; parents, Nathan and Caroline (nee Scheiber) Harder; brothers: Leo, Ray and Ed; sisters: Joan (in infancy), and Genevieve Creelman; sisters-in-law: Margaret Harder and Nora Harder; brother-in-law, Edgar Casey; and by step-daughter-in-law, Violet Barnes. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Friday, October 19, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Others taking part were: Gerry Barnes, crossbearer; Jamie Hull and Audra Sollosy, scripture readers; Greta's granddaughters, intentions; Neil and Laverne Barnes, eulogists; Mikayla Sinclair, memorial table attendant. Music ministry was provided by the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared in Greta's life, particularly her special friend Vi Painter". Active pallbearers were Kent Barnes, Kurtis Sollosy, Adam Weiland, Jared Weiland, and Kevin Schultz. Interment followed at Humboldt Public Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to either the New Horizons Senior Citizens Club or the St. Augustine Parish Centre. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
