BECKER: George Michael

The death of Mr. George Michael Becker of Caleb Village, Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Friday, September 6, 2013. He was 91 years of age. George was born at Carmel, SK, on June 30, 1922, to John and Anna (nee Pape) Becker and was the second youngest in a family of five girls and three boys. He grew up on the farm in the Carmel district and attended school at Highgate and Carmel Station. Following his education, George spent several years in British Columbia working in lead and zinc mines. As well, he served with the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II. In 1946, George came to Humboldt and was employed as a parts man at various agricultural and automotive dealerships, including L.L. Bruser and Co., Rauw's Garage and Taxi, J.J. Sawatsky, and Wheelers Wholesale. On June 17, 1947, George married Anne Witt in Immaculate Conception R.C. Church south of Carmel. Their union was blessed with three sons and three daughters, Dennis, Donna, Duane, Gwen, Mary and Shaun. George began working at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where he eventually became Chief of Maintenance. He retired in 1987. George was known as a "jack of all trades" so one could always count on him for a helping hand. Being a perfectionist, his philosophy was "do it right or don't do it at all". George was a very patient man and loyal to his family; they always came first, and he taught his children good values of life. A person of deep faith, he was devoted to the church. George was also involved in many clubs, organizations and sports; he was president of minor baseball and hockey, and was inducted into the Humboldt Sports Hall of Fame for his contribution to Special Olympics. George was the head of the Prairie Ridge Condo Association, and also sat on the St. Elizabeth's Hospital board and on the Futuristic Industries board, where he helped the latter with upgrading policies. At present, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus having attained the status of 4th Degree Knight in March of 2013, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and chairman of the Saskatchewan Association for the Mentally Challenged in Humboldt. As well, he held the Attorney General's appointment of Justice of the Peace and was appointed as a Marriage Commissioner. George will be lovingly remembered by his three sons and three daughters: DENNIS (Chantel) Becker of Saskatoon, SK, and family Jason (Jamie) Becker and their children Braxton and Bella, and Lee (Vanessa) Becker and their children Johnathon and Jayda; DONNA (Tom) Miller-Dodsworth of Vancouver, BC, and son Jeremy Miller; DUANE "Buster" (Judy) Becker of Prince Albert, SK, and family Carly (Aaron) Anderson and their children Jackson and Avery, and Megan (Steve) Sutherland; GWEN (Gerald) Wourms of Saskatoon, SK, and family Susan (Nolan) Penner and their son Colin, and Mathew Wourms; MARY (Frank) Wiegers of Denare Beach, SK, and family Josh Wiegers, Brodie Wiegers (Jelisa Kerfont) and Lisa (Newton) Komaransky and their children Emanuel and Kail; and SHAUN Becker of Saskatoon, SK; and by one sister, Caroline Loxterkamp of Langley, BC. He was predeceased by his wife Anne (nee Witt) Becker (November 11, 2010); daughter, Elizabeth Anne (in infancy); parents, John and Anna (nee Pape) Becker; four sisters: Anne, Betty, Margaret and Barbara; and by two brothers: John and Joe. A Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, SK, on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Others taking part were: Bella Becker, crossbearer; Magdalen Dagenais, scripture reader; Nestor Trach, intentions; Susan Penner, Megan Sutherland and Carly Anderson, giftbearers; Dolores Hinz, music ministry; Nestor Trach, eulogist; Johnathon Becker and Jayda Becker, memorial table attendants. Honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in George's life. An Honor Guard was formed by the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and the Royal Canadian Legion. Active pallbearers were Jason Becker, Brodie Wiegers, Mathew Wourms, Nolan Penner, Josh Wiegers and Tom Novocosky. Interment followed at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery, Humboldt, SK.
