It is with great sadness the family announces the death of Mrs. Ethel Gladys (nee Kennedy) Schlacter 93 years of St. Mary’s Villa Humboldt on Sunday, February 22, 2015. Ethel was born on October 17, 1921 to John and Ada (nee Angevine) Kennedy at Port Phillip, NS. She attended Rockley School until 1929 when her family moved to Saskatchewan and settled in the Morvin district. In 1940 she married Peter Schlacter and moved to Lucusville where they began their mixed farming career and they later moved to the Hillsley district to continue their mixed farming. In 1952 they were blessed with the adoption of Gaye and Gary at 15 months of age. The family moved to town in 1957 for the winter months and back to the farm for the summer. In 1959 Pete and Ethel purchase the Bowling Alley in Humboldt which they operated until 1963. Ethel was a true homemaker of her generation... large vegetable garden, preserving fruits and vegetables, baking (a special treat were her homemade buns and pies), and all the extras to make for a happy home. She did a lot of crocheting and knitting in her earlier years on the farm but went on to sewing which lead her to leading a 4H group in sewing. Ethel could always be found helping Pete with farm chores… hauling grain during harvest, chasing and milking cows and raising chickens and ducks. In 1972 Ethel and Pete retired to Humboldt. Ethel then became more active in curling, bowling, church organizations and spending quality time with her grandchildren. In 1998 Pete passed away. Due to health issues, in 2000 Ethel moved to Bethany and later St. Mary’s Villa where she resided until present. Ethel will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by: Gary (Gwen) Schlacter and family; Tracy (Curt) Bells and children Cole and Jade; Colin (Britany) Schlacter and children Lexi and Brielle; and Regan Schlacter all of Humboldt; Gaye (Trent) Burkart of Pilger and family; Kery Hoffman and children Brittany, Jade and Ethan all of Prince Albert; and Kim Hoffman and daughter Shylo both of Edmonton, AB. Ethel was predeceased by her husband Pete; parents Ada and John Kennedy; brothers: Walter, Howard, Lawrence and Evan (Ethel’s twin); sisters: Muriel, Marian, and Edith; and by numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. A Funeral Service was held on Friday, February 27, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. from Westminster United Church Humboldt, officiated by Rev. Brenda Curtis. Internment followed at the Humboldt Public Cemetery beside her husband Pete. Memorial donations in Ethel’s memory may be directed to Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan, St. Mary’s Villa Foundation or Humboldt District Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to MALINOSKI & DANYLUIK FUNERAL HOME Humboldt.
