The passing of Mr. Edward Jacob Wacholtz of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Watson, SK, occurred at his residence on Friday, January 30, 2015, at the age of 94 years. Edward was born on the farm near Englefeld, the second youngest of six children. He attended Greenside School until Grade 6 after which he worked at home farming with his brother Paul for 18 years. He often remarked that because of Uncle Paul we were able to enjoy farming prosperity. He raised cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys as well as grew cereal crops. During the winters of war years he worked for Wilfred Hoolihan at a logging camp north of Lovesiding, SK, where he was reputed to be able to eat very large stacks of pancakes. He married Cecilia Nordick July 18, 1950 at Holy Guardian Angels Church in Englefeld. When asked why he married Mom he always said it was because "they were the last two single people in town". The couple was blessed with eight children. Volunteerism is a value he instilled in his children. Edward was very community focused and an avid volunteer. He bought many raffle tickets to support fund raising and ended up being a lucky man, often winning prizes. He was active in many community activities such as Saskatchewan Sport and Recreation Zone 5, Knights of Columbus, Conservation and Development, The Englefeld Recreation Board, The National Farmers’ Union, NDP, The Senior’s Games, and others. When you use the Englefeld rink, look through the Fields of Prosperity History book or attend Hogfest, take a moment to think of Ed and the others who made these things possible. Edward was family oriented, and always wanted his family to get along and be ready to celebrate. He wanted his children to be aware of their history, the world around them, and their place in it. They went on many family vacations, camping and swimming. He drove them to hockey, skating, baseball, volleyball, music lessons, 4-H, the list goes on. Mom and Dad never missed a dance, and he would drive his children and their friends around to movies and hockey games at the drop of a hat. He always encouraged his children in all aspects of their life especially education and family. He willingly shared Cecilia with the community and her brothers and sisters in times of need. He knew the value of her love and her many talents. Edward spent many hours driving the back roads watching water levels, showing folks the location of everyone's land and sharing the history of the area. As a lover of harvest, in his later years Ed took to picking berries, surely when we see the wind in the Saskatoon berry bushes it will remind us of him with his cane pulling down the branches. Many of these berries made fine wines and liquors. Edward loved people and connecting the people he met to their family background. He spent some time socializing and tipped a few at the bar and happily took when it was offered. His home was open to everyone; Cis often said it was like Grand Central Station. He had many grandchildren and great grandchildren, he loved tickling them and giving them, big noisy hugs. Ed loved God, but he did sleep through a few sermons in his day. He did his best to live in God's grace. Edward retired from the farm in 1976 and moved into the town of Englefeld. In 2006 he moved to Quill Plains Centennial Lodge where he continued meeting and visiting with people and connecting with everyone who came to visit or play old time music. He was always thankful for even a few minutes of visiting time. He accepted trials with grace; he loved to joke and tease the caregivers and greatly appreciated the care given to him. Edward will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Cecilia Wacholtz, and their children; Glenn (Sylvia) Wacholtz and family: Luke (Lindsay) and Bonnie (Sebastian); Jeanne (Bill) Langhorne and family: Laurie Anne, Donna (Chris) and children Rylan, Nuri and Tia, Michael and children Allysia and Lea; Audrey (Pat) Zimmerman and family: Tracey (Sezgin) and son Zach, Jason (Melanie) and children Isaiah, Liam, Sophia, Noah and Isabel, Earl (Reneé) and children Brooke, Jarek, Sienna and Ryker, and Ashton (Brett); Denise (Peter) Ksyniuk and family: Ryan (Mandy), Matthew (Heather) and son Bennett, and Kelli (Ryan); Robert (Rose) Wacholtz and family: Stephane (Rochelle), Joseph, and AnneMarie; Terry (Kumi) Wacholtz; Cynthia Dumont and daughter Samantha and children Sophie and Ella; and Rita Wacholtz (Terry) and son Caleb; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
