The death of Mrs. Dorothy Rose (nee Kiefer) Altrogge of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, following a short battle with cancer at the age of 86. She was the last surviving member of her generation. Dorothy was born on February 6, 1926, to Peter and Helen (nee Steger) Kiefer at Old St. Benedict, where her parents operated the General Store and Post Office. The family later moved to Cudworth, where Dorothy received her elementary and secondary education. She then enrolled in an accounting and bookkeeping course at a Business College in Winnipeg, MB. After graduating from there, Dorothy operated an egg candling station and managed the books for her parents' hatchery and poultry ranch. In 1945, Dorothy met Leo, who came to work on the ranch. Dorothy and Leo were married on August 6, 1946. They worked at the family business for two years, then moved to Lake Lenore, where Leo was employed at M. Hopfner and Sons for five years. Leo then accepted a partnership in Hergott Farm Equipment. The rest of their married life was spent in Humboldt where they raised and nurtured ten children. Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 66 years, Leo Altrogge; 10 children: Tom Altrogge, Marguerite (Ken) Engel, Susan (Todd) Degenstein, Peter Altrogge (Lois Cherniak), Paul (Rita) Altrogge, Jack (Virginia) Altrogge, Mary-Lou (Wes) Britton, Jim (Trish) Altrogge, Bart (Sharon) Altrogge, and Andrew (Janice) Carr; 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Daniel, in infancy; her parents, Peter and Helen (nee Steger) Kiefer; four sisters: Esther Kiefer, Leona Huselage, Helen Lambert, Clara Kitching; and by her brother, Roman Kiefer. The Prayer Service for Dorothy was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Friday, December 7, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., led by Nestor Trach and organist Dolores Hinz.
