BATTLEFORD – At the town of Battleford’s Jan. 23 meeting, council approved administration's recommendation to issue a business licence for Ohos Vape Co., which will operate a shop downtown.
According to federal and provincial regulations, the vape shop is not allowed to put up signs that attract children and have submitted its plans and proposed perimeters to the town. All of the requirements for its permit to operate were accurate and included, according to administration.
Councillor Kevin Russel shared his thoughts, saying that there are pros and cons, and a negative aspect comes with vaping. However, it is another positive for the town in the form of another business.
“There are two drinking establishments on the same street that sell smoking products. I don’t have an issue as long they’re up to date with federal and provincial regulations; that’s what we have to follow. I wish them all the best.”
Councillor Judy Pruden wanted to stress that they must adhere to the town’s bylaw regarding vaping, including no vaping on the sidewalks. She also wished them good luck with their business and requested that the town clarify if minors are allowed on the premises with a parent or guardian.
Councillor David George added that he has nothing to say other than welcome but also added that he has received feedback from disappointed members of the community,
“For the most part, our hands are tied even if we were against it.”
“We're here to decide policy, not what's right and wrong,” Mayor Ames Leslie added before the passage of the motion. “As a parent, I don't support vape shops … I have a fundamental issue with it, but it’s a business, and we will welcome them to the community.”
