THE BATTLEFORDS - According to a press release from The Battlefords Scuba Community, the recipients of the 2023 Saskatchewan Underwater Council and the BSC scuba diver training scholarships have been announced. The $1000 scholarships will pay for the recipients to become certified as Open Water Scuba Diver, the basic level of certification.

The winner of the BSC scholarship is Sydney Neufeld of Saskatoon.

The scholarship covers the cost of training and equipment for the training, accommodation and travel for all three portions of the training, which include knowledge development, pool time and open-water completion dives. All training will be carried out in the Battlefords and area.

Neufeld is looking forward to the calming effect of diving with its slow, controlled breathing that allows her to focus and put herself in the moment. She is looking forward to enjoying the health benefits of the sport while gaining once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Neufeld is completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree at the Edwards School of Business and plans on starting her Juris Doctor program this fall. She sees scuba diving as one of the tools available to help her maintain a balance between life and work.

"We are looking forward to working with Sydney during her training and diving with her as a certified diver. Welcome to our watery world Sydney!" reads the release.

The winners of the SUC scholarships have also been announced, which include Lauren Demyen and Makenna Smith.

"The SUC is excited by the opportunity to assist these eager young women with the dreams and their training. It will be a unique experience for all."
