Maidstone and District News: MHS drama presents 'The Empty Toybox'

U13 Maidstone Jets to compete in STEP finals.

MAIDSTONE — Phyllis Watson passed away March 10 in Lloydminster. Her funeral was held in Maidstone Legion Hall March 17. Phyllis belonged to Maidstone Legion Ladies Auxiliary for 30 years and was a cherished friend to our members as well as our community. She was an avid gardener, excellent cook and loved ball and curling. Volunteering at lunches and bake sales, bowling, working at auctions, or just out on the town, Phyllis and Kelly Shreenan enjoyed visiting with all of us. Our sincere sympathy is extended to all of her family.

Maidstone Museum’s monthly meeting was held March 20 with eight members present. Fundraising and preliminary plans for the 2023 season were discussed. The museum opens Saturday, June 3 with a volunteer at the museum from 2 to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until Sept. 3. Tours and events are available at other times by calling the museum at 306-893-2890 (messages checked regularly). We are looking for volunteers in any capacity. The next meeting is April 17 at 7 p.m. at the museum.

Maidstone Library reminds us they have story hour for preschoolers every Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. This Friday, March 24, the Pre-K staff (Mrs. Whiting, Mrs. Stonehouse and Mrs. Rhinehart) will be there from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m. to answer any questions about the Pre-K program.

Maidstone High School Drama presents “The Empty Toybox.” There is dessert theatre April 19 at 7 p.m. ($20) and dinner theatre April 20 at 6 p.m. ($30). Call the school 306-893-2351 to order tickets.

Congratulations to Maidstone High School junior badminton players: Gwen and Alexis won silver in girls’ doubles, Noah and Karyss took bronze in mixed doubles at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School tournament, and Jordan won silver in boys’ singles at Junior Mega Birdie in Maidstone.

Maidstone Skating Club put on two amazing “Glitter on Ice” shows last weekend. Battlefords Skating Club provided a guest skater to enhance each performance. Ellie Kraft won carnival queen with an incredible number of ticket sales. Rori Bolig was first runner-up and Emma Schwartz was second runner-up.

Hockey results: With two wins and two losses at the U9 A side in Maidstone, our U9 Reds are done for the season.

U9 Blues went 4-0 in round robin at B side in Lashburn, beating Lashburn 2 in the final 9-8 in overtime to go on against Meadow Lake 3 in championship playoffs. Maidstone won March 16 in Meadow Lake 5-3 and March 20 in Maidstone 12-5 to become STEP League B side champions.

In the U13 STEP championship finals, Maidstone Jets will play Neilburg Monarchs Tuesday, March 28 in Maidstone at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, March 29 in Neilburg at 7 p.m.

In provincials, U13 won 10-4 against Outlook in the Northern on March 18. They now play Gravelbourg in C finals: Saturday, March 25 in Maidstone at 1 p.m. and Sunday, March 26 in Gravelbourg at 5 p.m.

U15 Maidstone Jets won 5-2 over Spiritwood in game 2, round 2 on March 14. This tied the series prompting a 10-minute mini-game with Maidstone winning to advance to finals against Meadow Lake. Games are March 21 in Meadow Lake and March 23 at 7 p.m. in Maidstone.

U15 Northwest Hawks girls’ team beat Warman Bengals 3-1, then defeated Prince Albert Foxes 6-3 in round 3 league playoffs on March 19. As SFHL B side North champions, they move on to Lumsden for provincial finals.

• April 1-2 - 36th annual Maidstone Trade Fair at the arena (Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

• April 1 - Milleton Hall Spring Fling Dance at 8 p.m.

• April 6 - Kin Club’s Easter Family Dance at Maidstone Legion Hall 7 p.m.
