PRINCE ALBERT - A man has received an eight-year prison sentence for manslaughter in the death of Frank Lund.

Justin William Madden previously pleaded guilty on June 25, 2024, to manslaughter in the death of Frank Lund in the Prince Albert area in 2023. He was originally charged with second-degree murder.

At the Court of King's Bench in Prince Albert on Sept. 11, 2024, Justice RC Mills sentenced Madden to eight years in prison. Less enhanced credit for time served, he has six years and about one month left to serve in custody.

He was also ordered to provide a DNA sample and received a 10-year firearms ban. He must also abide by a no-contact order involving three people.

In the Agreed Statement of Facts, the court heard that Frank Lund died on June 4, 2023, at the age of 78.

Madden had been living at Lund's home in the RM of Buckland at the time of the incident. Lund was Madden's step-father.

Madden was said to have told police that on the evening of Saturday, June 3, 2023, he and Lund had been drinking a 60 oz bottle of vodka.

He said Lund was mumbling "crazy stuff" and he felt it was Lund's intent to do something to his girls. Madden then got enraged and began to hit Lund.

At one point, Lund ended up on the ground. Madden said he kneeled on Lund's chest, then left the room.

When he realized Lund wasn't breathing, he attempted CPR and administered Nitroglycerin, which can be used for acute relief of angina.

When Madden knew that Lund stopped breathing, he noted he was sorry about it.

Madden also said he spray-painted the words "Pedi!" on Lund's garage door, but he didn't remember when he did it.

According to the autopsy, Lund died by blunt force trauma to the head, neck and trunk.

In deciding Madden's sentence, Justice RC Mills accepted a joint recommendation from the Crown and Defence for an eight-year sentence for the charge of manslaughter.
