Senior hockey team to surface in Kamsack

A group of sports organizers led by Kamsack business owner Wayne Sas and recreation director Paul Keys today announced its intention to form a senior hockey team that will play the 2012-13 season in the Fishing Lakes Hockey League (FLHL).

A group of sports organizers led by Kamsack business owner Wayne Sas and recreation director Paul Keys today announced its intention to form a senior hockey team that will play the 2012-13 season in the Fishing Lakes Hockey League (FLHL).

"Community support is essential for this venture to succeed," said Sas, a former top player with the Kamsack Flyers. "Senior hockey is fast-paced and exciting. We have some great young talent and hope to see a very competitive team in the fall."

The FLHL last season, had teams in Kelvington, Foam Lake, Arborfield, Porcupine Plain and Canora. Each team played eight home games in the regular season. League president Kelly Patrick said he welcomes Kamsack's bid to form a team and join the FLHL.

"I will help you guys in any way I can."

According to recreation director Paul Keys. "The Kamsack senior hockey team has until Sept. 6 to meet the requirements of league entry."

These requirements include FLHL entry fees and insurance fees to be paid to the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association (SAHA). The team must also present the league with a full roster of eligible players and generate enough money to play for new hockey jerseys, ice time in Kamsack, and travel expenses for road trips. At least $15,000 must be raised.

"Having a senior hockey team in Kamsack is long overdue," said Logan Hilderman, a 22-year-old Kamsack resident who played last season with the Canora Cobras. He said that at least 10 skaters and two goalies have already agreed to play. Try outs will be held this fall. A public meeting to launch the new Kamsack senior hockey team will be held on May 31, at 7:30 p.m., upstairs in the Broda Sportsplex. Kindly plan on attending. The goals of this meeting are to elect a board of directors, select a name for the team, sign a core group of players and announce fundraising strategies and events. For more information, please contact Sas at 542-4224, Keys at 542-2044.
