A couple of lopsided losses saw the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers fall from fourth to ninth place in the 14-team 鶹ýAV Saskatchewan Minor Hockey League Midget ‘AA’ Division.

The Kinsmen Terriers (5-6-2) sit in ninth place with 12 points, just one point back of five different teams (Moose Jaw, Regina Rangers, Prairie Storm, Weyburn and the Regina Vics).

The Notre Dame Bantam ‘AAA’ Hounds (11-1-0) continue to lead the league with 22 points, three points up on second place Estevan (8-3-3).

The Midget Hounds (7-2-4) are third with 18 points while Melville (4-6-3) is tenth with 11.

The Notre Dame Argos (5-6-0) are 11th with 10 points, the Regina Capitals (2-5-2) sit in 12th with six while Swift Current (2-10-0) is 13th with four and Lumsden/Bethune (0-9-1) is last with just one point.

Last Tuesday

Last Tuesday, Nov. 10, the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers made the nearly two hour trip to Regina to take on the Regina Vics.

The Vics struck first just before the midway point of the opening frame when Randen Schmidt beat Yorkton starter Dakota Berezowski for a 1-0 lead that held up through the first 20 minutes of play.

A quick power play goal just 30 seconds into the second period by Chase Nameth gave Regina a two goal advantage. Matthew McCaw made it 3-0 for the Vics at the 13:32 mark of the second period before barrelling into Berezowski, ending the night for the Yorkton net minder just before the midway point of the second period as Berezowski – replaced by AP call-up Cameron Zamonsky - was removed from the game for precautionary measures.

Colin MacDonald got Yorkton on the board not long after the goaltender change when he put his second of the season past Regina goalie Morgan Bogdan.

Regina and Yorkton would then trade goals late in the period, with Regina’s Will Jordan and Yorkton’s Carter Lake tallying to make it a 4-2 game after 40 minutes.

Three Regina goals in two minutes and 35 seconds early in the third period made it a 7-2 game, and although Kinsmen Terrier leading scorer Brodie Ottenbreit managed to score his tenth of the season later in the period it was not enough, as the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers lost 7-3.

Saturday

The Kinsmen Terriers were hoping that home ice would indeed be an advantage on Saturday afternoon as they looked to forget about the 7-3 loss in Regina, but in reality Saturday’s game proved to be no better as the hometown Kinsmen Terriers were decimated 6-1 by the visiting Prairie Storm.

Jake Stewart and Taylor Schmidt scored second period goals for the Prairie Storm before a four goal outburst in the second period - two by Dayton Buchanan and one each by Jordan Dasko and Schmidt – made it 6-0 for the Prairie Storm.

A lone Yorkton goal in the third period by Ashton Shewchuk broke the Garrett Blomquist shutout bid with 16:24 remaining in the game, but that would be it for Terrier offence on the night in a 6-1 loss.

Carter Park – returning to the team after an injury sustained during football, as well as sickness – shouldered the loss during 30 minutes of four goal play before being removed from the net in favour of

Berezowski for the final 30 minutes.

Following the game Yorkton Kinsmen Terrier head coach Grant Ottenbreit wasn’t happy, saying that while his team is doing some things right, the fact that you have to dig for positives is a problem. “You have to find the positives in stuff but it seems like we keep having to look for positives,” said Ottenbreit. “That means there are quite a few negatives. Little things aren’t getting done right and it’s bringing in some bad results. “

The head coach then stated that each and every player – as well as the coaches - has to step back and decide whether or not they’re there to compete. “We just have to make sure that everyone is on board from the goaltender and the defence to the forwards and the coaches, everybody,” offered Ottenbreit, continuing, “We all have to buy in and make sure we’re on the same page otherwise there won’t be any success.”
