The Yorkton Terriers tangled with what turned out to be a Jekyll and Hyde version of the Melville Millionaires on the weekend.
The weak Jekyll version of the Mils showed up Friday evening at the Farrell Agencies Arena and were dispatched 8-0 by the host Terriers.
Yorkton led 1-0 after one period thanks to a Tyler Baier goal with only 27-seconds left in the frame.
The Terriers then pumped in five in the second, Baier with his second and Corwin Stevely scoring on the powerplay, with Brandon Sookro, Adam Santoro and Shane Sherban scoring even strength markers.
Sherban with his second of the game, and Carson Welke added third period goals to round out the 8-0 win.
Jakob Severson had the shut-out in his first home-ice start facing 23-shots.
Josh Bykowski was left in the Mils鈥� net facing 48, and allowing all eight.
Severson termed the shut-out 鈥渆lectric鈥�, adding while he is new to the Terriers he learned pretty quickly about the long-time rivalry with the Mils.
The young net minder said the team played well in front of him 鈥済oing 110 per cent every single minute.鈥�
As for the trade that brought Severson to the Terriers from the Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League wasn鈥檛 exactly unexpected. He said the situation with the Clippers was not a good one.
鈥淚 asked to leave,鈥� he said, adding he was pleased to be coming to a team where he sees opportunity to play and to help a young team win some games.
While aware the Terriers are young he said he sees leadership in the dressing room, and that has him excited to be part of the team.
The win was the Terriers third in a row after a tough start to the season and head coach Trent Cassan said timely scoring has been the difference.
鈥淥bviously getting our goals on our opportunities has been pretty key for us the last three games,鈥� he said.
The time on the road at the recent SJHL Showcase seemed to bring the team together too. Cassan said in their Showcase game against La Ronge the Ice Wolves tried to be physical with the younger Terriers, and his team plotted through that, and gained confidence in the fact they could stand up to physical play and win.
Friday at home against the Mils the Terriers were also steadied by Severson in net, said Cassan.
鈥淚 thought the first period was pretty even,鈥� he said, adding his netminder made a couple of solid saves to keep the Mils off the scoreboard until the Terriers really started to roll in the second.
As for the acquisition of Severson, Cassan said the team 鈥渄idn鈥檛 start the year very good,鈥� and there was a need to put some competition into the goaltending situation to help steady that part of the team鈥檚 game.
In Severson the Terriers picked-up something of an unknown, in the sense they were going on what others were saying about him, but in a week with the team he has shown a competitive side.
A night later the Millionaires, winless in their first nine games on the season, finally found a bit of 鈥楳r. Hyde鈥� rebounding to defeat Yorkton in their home barn.
Sookro started the Terriers out on the right foot scoring at 7:40 of the first, but the Mils would respond with two of their own in the frame. Tyler Chavez-Leech and Christian Stevens getting the Mils鈥� markers.
Tyson Predinchuk added a Millionaire goal in the second.
McKenzie Welke drew the Terriers within one with a goal 14:20 into the third, but that was as close as they would get as Liam Shaw added an empty-netter for the Millionaires to round out their 4-2 win.
Severson took the loss in the Terrier net facing 32-shots, while Brandon Wells had the win for Melville facing 33.
The Millionaires have their first win on the season, but remain in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League鈥檚 Viterra Division basement with only two points.
Yorkton sits third with a 3-7 record and six points.
Weyburn tops the Viterra with 15-points, with Estevan second with 11.
Showcase win
The Terriers made it two wins in a row in Warman at the SJHL Showcase defeating Melville last Tuesday.
The Mils went into the game winless on the season but scored only 1:49 in on a shot by Jaden Kreklewich.
Regan Seiferling replied for Yorkton with a powerplay goal at 8:41.
However Melville would take a lead to the dressing room as Christian Stevens scored at 10:52 to give his team a 2-1 lead.
That lead evaporated at Seiferling tied the score 2-2 4:24 into the second.
A powerplay goal by McKenzie Welke gave the Terriers their first lead of the game 10:05 into the middle frame.
The 3-2 lead would hold until the third period where Reid Anderson and Jordan Evans into an empty net would solidify a 5-2 Yorkton win.
Recent Terrier acquisition Jakob Severson would get the win in the Terrier net facing 38-shots, while Josh Bykowski faced only 24 in the loss for the Mils.

The Terriers will head to Wilcox to face Notre Dame tonight (Wednesday).
Flin Flon is scheduled to visit the Farrell Agencies Arena Friday, with the Terriers headed to Humboldt for action Saturday.
And, as Canada awaits the results on the federal election next Monday the Terriers will head back to Wilcox to again face the Hounds.
