The Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers of the SSMHL Midget Division picked up three important points this past weekend in the form of a 1-1 tie with the Prairie Storm on Saturday and a 6-2 win over the third place Notre Dame Hounds on Sunday.
Saturday saw the two teams skate to a scoreless first 20 minutes before Carter Armstrong opened the scoring for the Prairie Storm.
Nicholas Demchuk fourth goal of the season but second in as many games brought the Kinsmen Terriers even, but despite outplaying the Prairie Storm for the rest of the way the Kinsmen Terriers simply could not find a way to solve Prairie Storm goaltender Dallin Sorensen again as both Sorensen and Yorkton鈥檚 Dakota Berezowski frustrated the offences of either team in a 1-1 draw. 鈥淲e deserved better in that game,鈥 said Kinsmen Terrier head coach Grant Ottenbreit. 鈥淲e had a few chances but we just couldn鈥檛 bury it. We had a good effort but again that鈥檚 our 11th tie of the season which is a little frustrating because that鈥檚 a lot of points that we鈥檝e left on the table but I was happy with the effort just not the outcome.鈥
A day later and the Kinsmen Terriers were back on the ice, this time taking on the Notre Dame Hounds.
An early goal by Yorkton defenceman Mackenzie Flett set the tone for the entire game, as the Kinsmen Terriers would score five more times in the game 鈥 three off the stick of Brodie Ottenbreit 鈥 for a 6-2 win.
Also scoring for Yorkton were Josh Rohatynsky and Reid Arnold while Denis Novikov and Kane Altwasser responded for the Hounds.
The three points move the Terriers (12-13-11) into sixth place in the 14-team SSMHL Midget Division, one point ahead of the Weyburn Lightstream Wings (12-13-10, 34 pts) but just two back of both the Notre Dame Argos (18-10-1, 37 pts) and Regina Rangers (17-11-3, 37 pts).
The Notre Dame Bantam Hounds (27-4-1, 55 pts) continue to lead the league with Estevan (21-8-6, 48 pts) seven points back in second.
The Melville Millionaires (14-14-5, 33 pts) round out the playoff position teams while the Prairie Storm (11-11-7, 29 pts), Regina Vics (12-17-4, 28 pts) and Regina Capitals (11-16-4, 26 pts) are all on the outside looking in.
The Moose Jaw Warriors (10-16-4, 24 pts) still have a slim chance at the postseason in 12th place, while Swift Current (8-21-2, 18 pts) and Lumsden/Bethune (1-29-1, 3 pts) are both out of playoff contention.
The next action for the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers will be tomorrow (Thursday) when they host the Regina Capitals in Theodore. Game time is set for 6:30pm.
